Hi @Arlet2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand your SD card reader is not recognizing an SD card when it's inserted. There are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

Ensure Proper Insertion:

  • Ensure that the SD card is fully and correctly inserted into the card reader. Sometimes a misalignment or insufficient insertion can cause the card not to be recognized. Make sure that the gold contacts of the card are facing in the correct direction.

Check for Physical Damage:

  • Inspect the SD card for any signs of physical damage, as this might prevent it from being recognized. Also, check the card reader slot for any visible damage or obstructions.

Clean Contacts:

  • Dust or dirt on the card or inside the card reader slot can prevent proper contact. You can use a can of compressed air to clean out the slot and a microfiber cloth to gently clean the contacts on the card.

Reformat the Card:

  • If the card’s data might be corrupted, sometimes reformatting the card can resolve the issue. However, be aware that reformatting will delete all existing data on the card. Make sure to back up any important information before proceeding.

  • Reformat the card using the camera or a computer. In Windows, right-click on the card drive, select "Format," and choose the appropriate settings.

Update Drivers:

  • Ensure your computer's card reader drivers are up-to-date. Outdated drivers can cause hardware to be unrecognized or unstable. You can check for updates on the device manager.

Test the Card in Another Reader:

  • Insert the SD card into a different device or card reader to determine whether the issue is with the card or the reader.

Test Another Card in the Reader:

  • If you have another SD card available, insert it into the reader. If this card is recognized, the original SD card may be faulty.

    I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
