- Why is the CPU in my new HP 15s-fq0000 Laptop sooooooo SLOW?...

I have just taken delivery of this laptop and am appalled at the incredibly poor performance of the Pentium N5030 CPU. At first I wondered whether it might have a problem but looking at a number of benchmark results on the web it appears that HP have throttled the chip by almost 50% when compared to Lenovo laptops running exactly the same CPU.
Having checked its performance on the CPU Benchmark I feel I have been sold an inferior product. Laughably the supposed retail price for this machine was over £300. Frankly there were better, and in reality FASTER, options, around the same price. Currently deciding whether to ask for a refund.

You may be expecting premium performance to an almost entry level processor.
A Celeron would be even slower.
For that reason I have always recommended AMD Ryzen platform laptops if Intel Core i3 or better wasn't within the budget.

Thanks for the swift response Erico.
FWIW I've been "playing" with computers since the Apple II days 🙂
Have to admit that I was buying cheap now that I am retired. Also, I have a desktop for the heavy lifting so don't need premium performance on the laptop. It's mostly used for a bit of word processing and surfing the web with a teeny bit of simple spreadsheets. So a relatively low powered CPU was all I needed, but instead of being just over double the power of the 12 year old HP laptop it was replacing, it's about the same power. And as I said, the benchmark for the same processor in a Lenovo is about double that of the new HP.
There were a few laptops with different CPUs all around the same performance level, although I didn't notice any with AMD Ryzen. And as you said, the Celeron is a slower chip. Except because HP have throttled the performance of the Pentium Silver N5030 a Celeron would actually be faster.
I just don't understand the logic of slowing it down.

Economizing is the reason I have been considering certified refurbished notebooks to get more bang for my retirement buck.

My son suggested I did the same. I had a look on ebay but I didn't find anything that fitted my requirements so ended up buying new.

Ah.
Well, new is indeed a solution.
I have used NewEgg.com as a source for my certified refurbished PCs.
A workstation that I purchased as a gift for a young cousin five years ago is still a workhorse.
They do ship internationally.

If you just got it and have a return privilege, exercise it. I would be curious to see the benchmark results as I find it hard to believe HP has throttled it back 50% compared to a Lenovo with the same CPU, but in either case I 100% agree with @erico; get an Intel Core (i3 at least) or at least an AMD Ryzen. The "budget" processor laptops just do not get the job done IMO and cause way more damage to the brand than any profit to be made by selling them.

Hi Huffer
I've had it less than a week and today one of the keycaps that had been loose popped off. I contacted HP Support to see if I could get a new keycap and they offered me a refund or replacement laptop. I've gone for the refund and plan to increase my budget so will be looking at abetter CPU.
Have to agree I also found it hard to see why, or even how, the processor would be throttled. But running a benchmark definitely gave me a result that was around half that expected.
Anyway, am now starting to look at better, do more expensive, laptops.
Cheers
Keith

I've being using / programming computers since the Zx Spectrum days! And I've never encountered such a case as this...HP should be done for fraud and be ashamed of themselves!
HP selling this laptop is 'item not described' or 'NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE" as this laptop is completely unusable.
A new laptop bought in this day & age should not take over 1 hour to open a word document. It should not be this slow.
I agree that HP have throttled the CPU as I checked the benchmarks for the same CPU before purchase and it doesnt perform as stated.
Going by the looks of this cheap plasticy laptop its obvious HP have bought some cheap Chinese inferior boards and are just packaging them with the HP brand hoping they can go on the brand name and make a quick quid.
I bought this brand new laptop for my Son for his college work - now he's getting in trouble because the tutor is asking him to open his work stored on his laptop and he cant as it jsut takes too long.
NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE HP - I WANT A REFUND! IVE CONTACTED YOUR CUSTOMER SUPPORT - LETS SEE HOW THIS GOES.
