model # M7-j120dx has 8gb of ram - want to upgrade to 16gb. Can I and do I need 2x8gb? Thanks

Yes you can and yes you do.
Specs say your 8 gigs is 2 x 4 gig modules. The memory is DDR3L-1600 SO-DIMM like this:
8-GB 693374-001
You have an easy access panel on the bottom of the laptop so you can reach the RAM slots and replace the 2 x 4 with 2 x 8.
