Hi,

I've recently bought a new laptop and I experience slight battery drain when the laptop is shut down. It is around 5% a day, so if for example leave laptop 90%  charged, after 4 days of not using, it'll have 70% battery left.

I've tried to put it back to the stock settings and it still happens. I looked through different options in WIndows, power button actually turns off the laptop, I have no power send to USB ports when it's off and I turned off fast start-up.

Battery check gives me 95% condition so it shouldn't be the issue.

Do you have any suggestions what can cause that drain? I feel like standard level is 1-2% a week, not 5% in a day.

Small update:

1. I've tried suggestions from https://windowsreport.com/battery-drain-shutdown/ and from @Echo_lake, unfortunately, they don't seem to help, same battery drop during the night.

2. I have found one option in BIOS that might help. In configuration tab, there's Charge through USB or something like that. BUT, if you disable it, it doesn't disable charging through USB completely, only when the computer is turned off or hibernated.

I didn't have time to check it yet, but it might actually help, as the laptop will not give power on USB when it's turned off, so it should result in lowered battery drain.

Tonight I will check it again and update tomorrow

Nearly all machines have this problem, I believe Microsoft and vendors including HP need to work this out. Some machines drop 1% or 2% each week but some machines drop 1% or 2% each night.  I've got 2 Microsoft Surface machines the older one (runs Windows RT) drops 2% each month and the newer one (runs Windows 10 Pro) drops 2% each week. My HP Omen drops around 1% each night and my HP 840 G5 (the one I'm typing on it now) the number is unpredictable. But I do not really care because except my Surface machines all my other machines (HP, Dell ...) use AC directly with docks and external devices.

In your case, 5% is a bit high. Please try

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Did this happen after a recent window or software update?
  • Did you try another charger?
  • Does the notebook shut down immediately (right after you unplug the charger)?
  • Do you get any error message on your notebook (Such as Plugged in, not charging, etc.)?

While you respond to that, let's try these steps:

Hard Reset: Follow steps from the link: https://hp.care/2GnkMa8. (do not skip any troubleshooting steps even if you feel steps are repeating)

BIOS default:

  1. Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
  2. Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
  3. On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
  4. Press F10 to Save and Exit.
  5. Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
  6. Follow the prompts to restart your computer. If the issue persists, follow next steps.

Run hardware diagnostics test on battery and Charger:

Use the following steps to open the Component Tests menu.

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  3. On the main menu, click Component Tests.
  4. The Component Tests menu displays. Your Component Tests menu might be different, depending on the components installed on your computer.
  5. To run both tests simultaneously, in the Component Tests menu, click Power Source, and then click Run once. Each component can also be tested individually.

AC Adapter Test:

The AC Adapter test provides an interactive test to determine if the AC power adapter is functioning properly. A good battery is required for this test. Before running the AC Adapter Test, HP recommends verifying that your computer can receive power by connecting a known working AC adapter.

Follow these steps to perform the AC Adapter Test.

  • In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click an AC Adapter Test.
  • Click Run once.
  • The AC Adapter Test begins.
  • When the test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen.

Battery Test:

Follow these steps to perform the Battery Test:

  1. In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click Battery.
  2. Click Run once. The Battery Test begins.
  3. When the battery test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen. For additional battery information, click Battery Details.

If the test passes, continue with these steps:

1. Go to Start, search for Device Manager, and open this result.

2. Expand batteries.

3. Right-click on the ACPI option (usually the 2nd option) and select delete or uninstall. Follow the prompts.

4. Shut down the computer.

5. Disconnect the charger.

6. Remove the battery.

7. Hold down the power button for 1 minute.

8. Insert the battery only.

9. Attempt to turn the battery on.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Thanks for your quick answer

ad1. I don't think it was any update, I was just not using laptop for a while and noticed more significant drop. I can't tell if it was connected with any recent windows/software updates.

ad2, 3, 4

I think we have a small misunderstanding here, I don't have any problem with laptop shutting down when I unplug the charger. I used 'shut down' as a synonym for 'turn off' it wasn't quite precise, sorry!

The situation is that when I don't use the laptop (it is turned off), I experience battery percentage drop, around 5% a day.

I followed your steps, now I have to wait and see in few days if it improved the situation.

All the tests I ran have showed positive results, both for battery and AC.

problem seems to be solved! Tonight 1% instead of 5% whichc is defintely an improvement. So, for people who might experience similar issues, try turning off USB charging (even when the laptop is turned off) in BIOS settings/configuration.
