HP 15.6 inch Laptop PC 15-fd0000 (B1PW0AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I just bought a brand new laptop. I took a picture of the battery percentage and the date and time.  I took another pic after using the laptop.   An hour and 9 minutes later, I'm down to 68%

I wouldn't have wasted  my money - $500 had I known the battery sucked

Hi @didi75810,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your new HP 15-fd0000 laptop’s battery seems to be draining faster than expected — dropping to 68% after about an hour of use. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be affecting the battery performance and how to optimize it.

a. Check Battery Health
 - Press Windows + X → Device Manager → Batteries.
 - Right-click Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery → Properties → Details tab → Battery Information.
 - Note if the battery status shows as “OK” or “Normal.”
 - Alternatively, run Command Prompt (Admin) and type:
  powercfg /batteryreport
 - This generates a detailed battery health report (usually saved at C:\Users\<YourName>\battery-report.html). Review the “Design Capacity” vs. “Full Charge Capacity.”

b. Adjust Display & Power Settings
 - Go to Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen and sleep.
 - Reduce screen brightness to around 50–60%.
 - Set shorter screen timeout (e.g., screen off after 5 mins when idle).
 - Under Power mode, select Best power efficiency instead of Best performance.

c. Review Background Apps
 - Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc)Processes tab.
 - Sort by Power usage or Power usage trend.
 - Identify high-usage apps (like browsers with many tabs, video streaming, or software updates).
 - Close unnecessary ones to conserve power.

d. Update BIOS and Drivers
 - Open HP Support AssistantUpdates → install all recommended BIOS and system updates.
 - Updated firmware helps optimize battery calibration and efficiency.

e. Battery Calibration (if drain remains inconsistent)
 1. Charge the laptop to 100%.
 2. Keep it plugged in for another 30 minutes after reaching full charge.
 3. Unplug and use normally until it shuts down automatically.
 4. Recharge uninterrupted to 100% again.
This recalibrates the internal controller for accurate battery readings.

f. Check for Windows Power Usage Insights
 - Go to Settings → Power & battery → Battery usage.
 - Review which apps are consuming the most power and disable “Background activity” for heavy apps like browsers, games, or Teams/Zoom.

I hope this helps.
