I did not know this.  I have used my HP laptop for 2 years now, rarely using the battery power, but always, aslmost 24/7, using mains power.  I think HP should make a warning of this prominent.

Thank you for this informative and IMPORTANT  post.

However, my laptop is still good for battery life of about 15 - 20 minutes.

Would the battery life be prolonged if, when using mains power for long periods, the battery were removed ? (prolonged over leaving the battery in place while mains was used)

On the other hand, read this article, and a couple of the refrences therein, for a better idea: then then the issue is "Does my laptop actively manage charging/prolonging lifetime ? "  I may be wrong but I have the impression that in my laptop's controls (might not be in control panel, but a piece of HP software) there was an option to 'Prolong battery lifetime"  (under software control ?)....In the HP Advisor Dock on my laptop, if I search for 'battery' I come acreoss the article (at the top of the list) 'Taking Care of your Laptop's Battery'  (which must have been written before 2011) which gives a general description of the limited battery care available in W7 and 'some manufacturers': it is not specific to my laptop, nor HP it seems.   Having looked at one reference (from http://www.makeuseof.com/answers/will-my-laptop-battery-be-damaged-if-i-use-it-while-charging/) , http://batterycare.net/en/guide.html, I recommend reading it. Another worth a look is http://batteryuniversity.com/learn/article/how_to_prolong_lithium_based_batteries. (Dell, it seems, may give the option to disable battery charge while plugged in, but I think you need to use and charge your battery once in a while if you do this [remembering to keep your battery cool at all times and the optimum charge level for a Li battery 'in store' is "40  percent")
