I suggest a HP Spectre x360 13t- series with 8GB, 512 GB SSD and a Core i5 processor. I upgraded the Windows 10 home to Pro because I had an extra license activation key.
That is what I bought two and a half years ago. It is perfect for travel and everything I want to do with it. It has given me zero problems and has no problems with the Windows 10 updates.

Kindly identify your notebook with its product number.
Try all available compatible USB ports on your notebook.
Have you verified that the external disk is working by plugging it into a different PC to see if it is recognized and can be viewed in Windows Explorer?
Please do that and let us know the results.

Thank you for your reply erico.
I had this problem for a while. Sometime for a reason or the other I reboot and it would work.
Yes this external drive works very well on other computers. I used it today all day.
I have touchpad issues from time to time; not sure if it can be related.

Hi,
We are here for you!
Have you run the system test and USB test in the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics utility?
You can access the utility by tapping the F2 key immediately after powering on the notebook. I suggest running the full system test and then the USB port test that is in the components section.
Unfortunately, you have not identified your notebook in a manner that I can use.
We need either a Product name(complete, not partial as you have give already) or a product number to gather information on the hardware configuration and year model.
right below this line in all of my responses is a description of how to obtain the product number.

Hi Erico,
Several things:
Here are more system info
M/N: 13-g210dx
P/N: E8C36UA#ABA
S/N: [Personal Information Removed]
Keyboard Controller Revision 23.27
BIOS Revision F.16
BIOS Date 12/26/2013
I made an Extensive System Test and quickly it abort with the following:
Processor Check : PASSED
Hard Drive SMART Check : PASSED
Hard Short DST Check: PASSED
HARD Drive Optimized DST Check : FAILED
FAILURE ID: 64N57F-725AA5-QFPH61-61RT03
Then I did a USB Port Component Test, it also failed:
USB Port Check : FAILED
FAILURE ID: 64N57F-725AA5-QFPH61-8D7B03
Then, I did a Hard Drive Quick Component Test
Testing Drive: 1
Hard Drive SMART Check : PASSED
HARD Drive SHORT DST Check: PASSED
Component Test : PASSED
I found the result of this Component Test strange since it did not pass in System Extensive Test.
I hope this will provide you sufficient information to progress the Hard Drive Access issue hoping that the response will not be to buy a new computer! Thank you.

The failure ID of the extensive system test translates to a failure code 307 which points to a storage device problem.
Would you mind invoking the Device Manager and going to the Disk Drive section?
I need the Brand/model name and complete part number that you see there for the SSD.
From there I will go to the manufacturer's website to get their test for the SSD. It will be far more specific that the one in the HP Hardware Diagnostic utility.
The USB port failure code translates to a failure code 434, which is an unspecified USB failure.
Are the USB ports working with any issues?

Thank you very much for your persistence in helping me.
First, could you please let me know the quickest way to get to my issue in the Customer Support. I keep on scrolling through all the issues. Is there a quick way to go directly to the relevant subject. Should I use Tags? Sorry, it is the first time I access the HP support.
Here is the Internal Disk identification :
SAMSUNG MZMTD128HAFV-000H1
Driver Date: 20006-06-21
Driver Version: 10.0.19041.1
By the way, practically, I do not have any issue with the internal drive.
Not sure I understand your second question regarding the USB port failure code 434:
Are the USB ports working with any issues?
I tried both USB ports with other external drives I have the same problem.
Again, your help is very much appreciated. Thank you.

This is in the proper section of the forum. Notebooks-->Hardware
OK.
I was just curious about the hard disk optimization test. That SSD is from 2015.
Your notebook is from the model year 2014-15 and your warranty is expired.
I can feel more confident in stating that there is a likelihood that communications components of the chipset on the notebook's system board are failing.
Four, five or six years is a good service life. At this point of ownership, given the issues you are having ,you should start sourcing a replacement laptop

Hi Erico,
Thank you for your last reply and to be straight forward. Yes, I bought this computer mid-year 2014. Indeed there are several issues with this computer and another two that I did not comment on it. It could be that all is related to a common hardware issue.
I bought exclusively HP product for the last 40 years and I am sad to hear that after 6 years with an HP product I have to consider to buy a new computer. I travel around the world with this PC and it could be that it has fatigued. I used it exclusively for personal activities. I have another computer for business purposes. May I ask you if you would recommend to buy a new HP Split. Being close to retirement and willing to keep on working on my owns I need a more powerful PC, that I could travel with easily. My other computer has 16 GB of RAM, an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-865OU CPU @ 1.9 GHz 2.11 GHz 64-bit OS, x64-based processor. Any advice to a good old engineer! I will appreciate very much if you could reply to this question. I will close thereafter unless you think that other diagnostic can be performed.
Regards,
gcf
