HP EliteBook 840 G3 Base Model Notebook PC

Description

can't update windows from W10 version 21H2 to W10 22H2

on an elitebook 840 G3 i5 - 6033U CPU 2.4GHz

Tried many times but never installs

When I check this against a list of processors suitable for this upgrade, the 6033U is listed for 21H2 Windows Processor Requirements Windows 10 21H2 Supported Intel Processors | Microsoft Learn but not for 22H2. Windows Processor Requirements Windows 10 22H2 Supported Intel Processors | Microsoft Learn

Does this mean that I can never upgrade to 22H2 with my processor?

Is the upgrade checking against this list and stopping.

Why is the 6033U not supported or has it just been missed off the list by mistake?

What about future upgrades?

I can't go to W11 because of the processor isn't in the MS list Windows processor requirements Windows 11 supported Intel processors | Microsoft Learn even though it meets the speed spec and all other required specs

Hi:

I don't know of any such processor as an i5-6033U (did you type that in error?), and your notebook should be able to run the latest build of W10, even though the i5-6300 or i5-6200 aren't on the list.

You may have to back up your files and clean install W10 22H2 which should work by making a bootable W10 installation flash drive with the media creation tool.

Download Windows 10 (microsoft.com)

I'm running W10 22H2 on a PC with an older intel i5 4th generation core processor.

In order to meet the minimum W11 processor requirements, generally you need a PC with an Intel 8th generation or newer processor.  No Intel 6th gen processors are supported for W11.

If you are interested in installing W11 on your PC as is, you can read this discussion for how I upgraded several HP and Dell notebook and desktop PC's that did not meet the W11 hardware requirements to W11 22H2.

You have to use the version of the Rufus utility that I zipped up and attached in the discussion (v3.18).

If the in-place upgrade fails, you should be able to clean install W11 using the bootable W11 installation flash drive you made with Rufus.

Thank for your help

still don't understand why it won't install and the need to do a clean W10 installation!

You're very welcome.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't know why you can't do an in-place update to W10 22H2.

I've had that happen to me in the past and clean installing Windows has always worked for me.

I recommend that you seek guidance on the Microsoft Windows support forum if you don't want to clean install W10 22H2.

They may have some tips for you to try.

, this may seem a stupid question but how do I reinstall a backup of my current programs after the new windows installation?

The last time I did a clean install, it took over a day to reinstall and update all of my software.

I've only reinstalled backup data file before.

HP Recommended

Yes, that is the downside of doing a clean install.

I don't use backups to restore my programs, so I wouldn't be able to help you with that.

I reinstall all of my programs from the installation media I have, and I only have a few such as Microsoft Office and Family Tree Maker which I have on disks.

It takes me about a couple of hours to reinstall everything.

One thing I do back up, and that is to copy and paste all of the folders inside my user profile to a portable hard drive and then after Windows installs, I copy and paste all of those folders from the portable hard drive to my new user profile, and they overwrite the empty folders with my files.
