You have a nearly 10 year old laptop there running a first gen Intel Core processor. They run hot. After that long it is likely that dirt/dust has caked up inside the fan. It would be a good idea to open it and clean it out and apply new thermal paste. Post back if you want to try that. It also might help to blast some strong compressed air into the vent. Stick a bent-out paperclip in there to hold the blades of the fan in place so you do not burn out the fan bearings. If a cloud of dust flies out, then you are likely doing some good and it may solve the problem at least for a while.
Post back with any more questions.

Thanks Huffer, I''ll try it.
By the way, I have come across (https://support.hp.com/ca-en/document/c00291048) that this problem might be linked to BIOS and it advised to download the "Winflash Utility for HP Notebook System BIOS - Windows-Based (F.14 or later), SP29750". However, the link for the download seems non-functional. Can you provide any idea on this?
Thanks again.

Tap F.10 as you power up to enter BIOS and see what level you are at right now. I suspect you are already at F.14 or higher.
F.48 is the highest level issued:

I would be a little concerned about starting a BIOS flash on a computer that might shut down in the middle of it.
