Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

hi,

i have  bought from 2 months the notebook hp 17-ab016nl(Z9A87EA)

it has i7 6700hq.

when i play every games, it slow down every 10-20 sec from max freq of 3ghz to 800mhz due to max temp 80-90°

how to resolve? The notebook is new, i think the ventilation system of the notebook is not enough.

i can confirm the issue by using the intel app: Intel(R) Extreme Tuning Utility, with throttle and specs monitor.

thanks

Hello, @cibernaio – Hope you are well 🙂

Thanks for reaching out to the HP Support Forums! I would like to help you with the notebook issue 🙂

Going through your post, I understand that the notebook is heating up while playing games. Are you keeping the notebook on an uneven surface? If so, try placing the laptop on a table top and check the performance. This is important because the laptop cooling vents tend to get blocked while kept in your lap, bed or any other uneven surface. Hence please check this and let me know if that makes any difference.

Alternatively, let's try to do a BIOS default on your PC. Here are the steps:

1) Shutdown the computer.

2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.

3) Press F10 once for BIOS.

4) Press F9 for BIOS defaults.

5) Press F10 to save and exit.

If the issue still persists, update the BIOS on your notebook. Follow the steps mentioned here for the same: http://hp.care/2fd4t1o

Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance.

Good luck 🙂

Hi,

not resolved.

- I have tried to reset to default bios

- bios is the latest version(and even all drivers)

- tested notebook on a empty table

As result, nothing to do, after 10 minutes on play games, the fan increase to very high speed.

the temp reaches 80degress and cpu throttle to 800mhz for 2-3 second,

now we are on spring, I do not imagine what temperature reaches this notebook in August ..
I fear that the cooling system of this notebook is undersized.

Do you have any other solution?

Thanks for support.

Hi! @cibernaio, I am the MrRobot. It looks like you were interacting with @Dvortex, but he is out of the office today so I'll take over from here.

It's been great to hear from you again. I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.

As you mentioned the issue still persists after updating the BIOS.

Try updating Intel chipset driver and Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Client Driver on your PC and check if it helps.

Please find the link to update chipset driver.

I'll keep an eye out for your response.

I hope you have a great day! 🙂

Hi,

sorry, the solution has not worked.

I have reinstalled the intel package but i think that all are already update because i have found in hp temp path:

C:\SWSetup

the same package name, it has asked me to overwrite folders.

All other  driver are uptodate and hp assistant not found any other new drivers.

Win power save option are setted on max performance in all parameters.

I have even placed a external fan near to air flow to maximize the cooling circle.

I have started grand thieft auto V on 1920x1980 (not 4k)and only after 10 second cpu has started to throttle to 800mhz, monitored by cpu-z

Any other solution? If needed i can post screen or video or log

Thanks a lot.

bye

@cibernaio, I was was waiting for your response indeed, thanks for getting back.

As you mentioned the steps suggested in the previous post do not work.

Try running a system diagnostics on your PC and let me know the results.

Refer this article to know how to run system diagnostics.

Also, refer this article to troubleshoot overheating issues on your laptop.

Hi robot,

i already runned F12,1 hour full system diagnostic, also video mem, battery, cpu,

all test are passed successfully, idem i have already viewed the page with overheating issue tips, but i think that is not usefull on my case because of my notebook was purchased new by two months, no dust issue.

On idle, like as on windows, the temp is 40 degree(intel vga), but on games it increase over 80..

note:

i have noticed that if i open intel extreme utility and start the  cpu full core stress test and concurrently i open gpu-z and start  video stress test for radeon 960m the cpu remain on full speed of 3.1ghz also on temp that go over 80-90-96 but never throttle.

Have you idea why in this condition there are no problem but if play games like as battlefield gta watch dogs2 it go in throttle?

regards

@cibernaio, It's great to hear from you again.

I appreciate your efforts for trying out the steps.

I would suggest you uninstall the NVIDIA graphics driver from device manager on your PC and install the latest drivers.

Please update the NVIDIA graphics driver using this link.

Once the graphics driver is updated on your PC, please try the steps recommended below.

Optimus technologies use software profiles to enable the use of the IGP, GPU, or a Global setting that lets NVIDIA automatically control the type of graphics processor. Use the following steps to add or change a software program profile.
Ensure that your computer is connected to the Internet.
Right-click the Windows desktop background (not the Start screen) and select NVIDIA Control Panel.
From the left menu, select Manage 3D settings, and then click Manage updates.
Click Get updates to ensure that your computer has all of the latest software and game profiles. When finished, click the close button to close this Window.
Click the Program Settings tab.
Click the drop down selection under "1. Select a program to customize:" and select the name of the software in the list of profiles.

Refer this article to know information about using Switchable Graphics or Dual GPUs.

Let me know if this works!

Have a wonderful day ahead! 🙂
