Hi @edge34,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

It sounds like your HP Victus 15-fb0000 is experiencing sudden CPU temperature spikes, but the laptop itself doesn't feel excessively hot. Here are a few possibilities and troubleshooting steps:

Potential Causes & Fixes

1. Sensor Misreading / Software Issue

  • Try a different monitoring tool: HWMonitor, HWiNFO, or Core Temp to verify if MSI Afterburner is showing incorrect values. If other tools show normal temps, Afterburner might be inaccurate.
  • Update BIOS & drivers: Sometimes, outdated firmware or drivers can cause misreadings. Check HP's website for updates.

2. Power Profile & Turbo Boost Behavior

  • Check Windows Power Plan:
    1. Go to Control Panel > Power Options
    2. Set it to Balanced instead of High Performance
    3. Click Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings
    4. Under Processor power management, set Maximum processor state to 99% (This disables Turbo Boost, which may be spiking temps)
  • Disable Turbo Boost via ThrottleStop or BIOS (if available in BIOS settings).

3. Thermal Throttling & Undervolting

Check for thermal throttling:

  • Use HWiNFO and check if your CPU hits Thermal Throttling (YES) under the Sensors tab.
  • If it's throttling, repasting thermal paste might help.

Undervolt with ThrottleStop:

  • Use ThrottleStop to reduce voltage (Undervolting by -80mV to -100mV can reduce temps).
  • HP often locks undervolting, but you can check.

4. Performance Mode in OMEN Gaming Hub

  • Open OMEN Gaming Hub
  • Switch Performance Control to Balanced or Quiet Mode
  • Some users report Performance Mode aggressively raises CPU voltage.

5. External Cooling

  • Use a cooling pad or slightly elevate the rear of the laptop for better airflow.

6. Internal Dust & Repasting

  • If you haven’t already, open the laptop and clean the heatsink & fans.
  • If the thermal paste is old, consider reapplying thermal paste with a high-quality brand (e.g., Arctic MX-6, Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!
