dv6-6c45eo

Hi

For some time now I have been trying to figure out why my hp dv6-6c45eo will not charge when the laptop is powered on.

If I leave it turned off and charge it, then it works fine on battery power. But it will not recieve a charge when it is powered on.

If I remove the battery it will not power on at all, so it seems to be something with the power delivery circuits on it.

I have tried to disassemble the machine and check that all cables related to charging and battery power are plugged in. I even bought an original HP replacement charger to make sure that the charger supplied with the notebook had not gone bad.

The notebook has not had liquid spilled over it, but it has been used in a basement with somewhat high humidity in the air about a year before the problem started.

Can the computer be fixed without replacing the entire motherboard, as currently the machine becomes a big plastic brick once I can no longer get replacement batteries for it 😞

If it can be fixed, what do I need to replace?

@Kenneth_H93,

Good day. A warm welcome to the HP community. I reviewed the case. I will be more than glad to assist you here. I also find this to be your first visit here. Let's try to make it a pleasurable experience. Brilliant efforts and great troubleshooting involved. Kudos to you for that.

  • DId it occur after a recent power outage or surge?
  • What is the operating system running on the machine currently?

It is clear as daylight that the issue is hardware related as multiple chargers have been tried. nevertheless, let's try these steps now:

  • Please uninstall the ACPI battery drivers from device manager by following these steps:
  • Right-Click on start button> click device manager> expand Batteries>then select all the drivers including the ACPI drivers and uninstall it one at a time. Then restart the computer and check again.

If it does not get resolved, then calibrate the battery from this link:https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-pavilion-15-ab200-notebook-pc-series/8499306/model/8818875/d...

  • Then update the bios and chipset drivers from this link http://hp.com/drivers and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Now check for issue resolution. If it continues, then please check this link out to improve battery performance. There is an associated video included as well. Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c01297640 HP Notebook PCs - Improving Battery Performance (Windows 10, 8, 7):
  • Also, run all the latest Windows updates along with the latest HP support assistant updates.
  • This should do the trick for you as long as there are no hardware issues. Otherwise, the computer needs to be repaired and may involve a motherboard replacement.

I am being honest about it here by keeping your best interest in mind without beating around the bush. I will send you a private message to assist you with the next course of action. Check your forum private message box in the upper right corner next to the bell icon.

Good luck and keep me posted about the developments. If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue and give the post a Kudos for my efforts to help. Thank you and have a great week ahead. 🙂

Thank you for the reply.

The laptop was previously running with the originally supplied HP installation of WIndows 7 Home Premium and all patches applied until then.

Some HP stuff like the BIOS might not be fully updated, but software running inside Windows should be fully updated.

Since the original battery only holds a few minutes of charge, I can barely get to Windows to perform any tests there.

So the only option would be to get it to run long enough to perform the tests in the hardware diagnostics.

No power outage has occurred when the machine was plugged in to the wall.

Since I could not get it to run, I have later pulled the hard drive and re-used it in another machine.

I am quite sure that the issue is hardwre related, but then it is just a matter of how to fix it. Can I simply order and orignal HP replacement battery or would a case like this require a full motherboard replacement?

@Kenneth_H93,

Thank you for your quick reply and it is nice to hear from you as well. Now It is possible that it is the battery alone. Step into a local Best Buy or Staples store and pop a battery in the computer and check without actually buying it. if it continues, then different batteries would have been tried and the battery, being the culprit is ruled out. Then it boils down to the motherboard and that needs to be replaced.

As please follow instructions from my earlier post to get further assistance.

If this helps, to simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help. If this helps, please mark this as Accepted Solution as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles.

Take care and have a blessed week ahead. 🙂

Hi

Well, unfortunately none of those stores are there here in Denmark, so I would need to purchase an original HP replacement battery from a store that sells original HP replacement parts.

So I will now try to see if I can order a replacement battery that will keep a charge and then perform the previously mentioned steps. If that does not help, I might need to replace the motherboard

Now I have gotten a replacement battery for the laptop and after charging the battery fully and verified that the system would boot, I tried to plug in the AC adapter while the system was running. It will still not charge when powered on. Not even inside Windows.

I then ran the battery test as you have previously mentioned and the battery test is passed, which is expected since this is a brand new replacement battery.

Since it was not charging I tried to run the AC Adapter tests and followed the onscreen instructions to connect and disconnect the AC Adapter from the wall outlet.

After a few tries I got this:

AC Adapter Test: FAILED

FAILURE ID: RU71X3-61999P-QFPK01-C18H03

PRODUCT ID: A7N95EA#UUW

Component Test: FAILED

I then also ran a system board test, just to see if the machine would detect any issues with the board.

Finally I tried to fully charge the laptop and then run a BIOS update. The laptop would however not let me patch the BIOS from within Windows 10, since it was not detecting the AC Adapter.

Currently the laptop has BIOS F.1B and the latest version seems to be F.1C

Without a way to flash the BIOS on battery power, I cannot get to the latest version.

Since it does still not get a charge even with the original 120W AC Adapter or a weaker 90W AC Adapter, while the computer is powered on, do I then have a defect on the system board or is it simply a component somewhere that I can unplug and order a replacement?

@Kenneth_H93,

 I read the response. Your excellent technical competence shines through. Kudos to your great efforts. It is amply appreciated.

Drop into a local Best Buy or Staples store and check with a different compatible AC adapter. If it charges correctly and powers on then the issue is fixed. You just need to replace the adapter and you are good to go DOn't buy the adapter from the local technician. Otherwise, you need to get the computer repaired.

As I wrote on the original post, I have already tried to replace the AC Charger.

Since the 120W original HP adapter I currently use, is brand new apart from that it has been stored on a shelf for about a year.

So I do really not see any idea in getting a new one, since I do noth ave stores like Best Buy or Staples here in Denmark.

So my only way is to buy a new one, so I do not see why I need to when the current one is new
