will be compatible with my hp elitebook 840 g1
and how to install it properly

This is the user's manual for your model.
When I owned an Elitebook 850 G1 years ago, I replaced a hard drive with a 512 GB SATA3 SSD. I don't see any reasons why you can't upgrade to a 960 GB 2.5" SATA3 SSD. Page 60 of the manual shows how to replace a hard drive.
