Pavilion 15 notebook
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

MODEL 15-n284ca   PRODUCT ID   F9H15UA#ABL    SERIAL   [personal info removed]

I have read in the service manual for the pavilion 15 notebook that some model 15s recognize up to 12 gb ram and some only support 8gb but i cannot figure out what is allowable for my exact model of the 15. On the product info pages and in the manual for the thing it states the size and type of what is already installed upon purchase but nothing i can find gives me info as to what i am capable of using in terms of maximum supported and also the max speeds of the ram itself.

thankyou for your insights as i am currently stumped and cant even message hp support for knowledge i have no option when in site or maybe im just slightly retarded as to where the option is on page i dunno but any help would be appreciated.

Correct Service Manual:

Manual

Memory is DDR3L-1600 SO-DIMM. That is the fastest that will work. Max is 2 x eight gig modules. Manual says 12 is the max but we proved years ago and ever since it will take a matched pair of 8 gb modules. In fact, computers pretty much always max memory with the same sized module in each memory port.

So if I get another 8gb stick that is same product number as the elpida stick already installed the computer will register the second stick after adding? I was under the assumption that the brand of ram did not matter so I bought another brand of ram and upon install it doesn't recognize there is anything in the slot even that is y I am inquiring as to the max ram it supports before I go and buy yet another stick to try but if you are confident that it can be done and only with matching pair I managed to find one for 50 bucks I'll stick my neck out again and give it another shot

I am confident it can be done. It needs to be a "matching" pair only insofar as speed of the memory and density (number of black blocks on the side of the module) and latency. Brand does not matter so much.

OK well first off let me tell you how much I appreciate that you are taking the time and energy to quickly and efficiently answer my numerous inquiries here  I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to computer components, their part numbers and what they mean so I have the one stick that originally was in computer and it is a 8gb 2rx8 pc3l 12800s-11-12-f3 and the one I bought that doesn't recognize as installed is a 8gb 2rx8 pc3l 12800s-cl11. Can u explain to me what 2rx8 and  the 11-12-f3 and the cl11 mean so I know what exactly the differences are between the 2 and y exactly it is not compatible.   I'm guessing those numbers have to do with format of the sticks themselves in some way but I have no idea as to what it refers to in any way.

Thank you for all your knowledge there are some times in my life I just wish my stupid self would have stayed in school past junior high this is one of them

Those are "identical" as I defined it. 2rx8 is the density 2 ranks is low density which is preferable for HP. CL=11 is the latency. 11-12-f3 is also latency of 11. So the second module should work. Make sure its installed correctly and the gold leads are all the way inserted at an angle, then pivot the module down until it clicks in place. Otherwise you may have a bad module.

OK thank-you.   If by your knowledge I do actually have proper module It must be faulty then cause I've tried it in both slots together with original and by itself to see if maybe it would work on it's own for some odd reason.  The computer wouldnt even boot then. Just a black screen.  But what you are saying is I should be able to buy another of the same type as I have already purchased and in theory I should be fine.  Kinda had a inkling that they were the same cause when I search for 11-12-f3 all I have been finding was the cl11 modules really except for the elpida module itself lol.   At least I know now I'm not completely off my rocker and I did infact have proper part to begin with its just a dud and ive been pondering and researching endlessly frustrated thinking I must be an idiot or something cause I've  swapped and added Ram from here to there in the past and never had issues before this as long as it fit in slot and was same style and computer supported that amount or more why now?  That is why I first inquired about the max the motherboard supported cause I thought that had to be the problem. The stick I purchased wasn't even used it was new but it came from China.  Do u think maybe the extreme cold it was exposed to during it's travel could very well had done it? It has been -35 celcius lately here but I didn't think that would be a problem without having power to it and working hard at those temperatures.   I was under the understanding that electronics like that heat was the enemy correct me if I'm wrong. But don't some high end liquid cooling setups computers use nitrogen for the cooling of CPUs and GPUs or am I mistaken?

HP Recommended

It's not the cold and its not that it came from China. Nearly all computer components come from China or somewhere in the Far East. Every technician who has been doing this long enough has gotten a bad brand new component. It doesn't happen often but every once in a while. We forget just how technically complex this stuff is. I always say its amazing it works at all.

I agree just the fact that everything we do on these computerized devices whether it be play games watch videos browse internet or any of the endless truly wild things that u r capable of doing all comes from 1s and 0s in different sequences and from those somehow they become all of the fantastic abilities that u have at your disposal technologically today.   Just goes to show how truly advanced the human race has become to even concieve the concept in the first place let alone take it to such an advanced level like we have today 100 years ago humans would not even think anything like this would ever even be concieved let alone possible no matter what and in less than a  century we have transformed to a race that is almost fully automated and virtual with endless machines and abilities that couldn't even be fathomed then but humans are smart enough to achieve the impossible and make a science of it all on top of that even

Thank-you for all your help I'm gonna try another stick once I get the money back from this one.   If I have further issues I'll be sure to reach out again it's nice to know when u need help thanks to technology it is easily achieved .

hello again.  i am still having issues with getting this new ram to work.  when i look in windows  task manager to inquire about the amount present it shows only the 8 gb from the old stick but it also says that there is only 1 slot to be used  and there is 2 slots on board.  why would it show only 1 utilizable slot when infact physically there is 2 present to be used.  i have ran a program called cpu z to see what it shows  and it shows in memory tab that there is 16gb present single channel whatever that means,  the spd tab next to it shows the original stick as present in 1 slot and the new stick  also as being present aswell in other slot but it says for both that the max bandwidth of both them is 800mhz  and when looking on the memory page beneath the general info window is one that is timings and in that window it says frequecy is about 680 to 700 mhz and lists the latency as 9.0  not 11 like the sticks say they are aswell as also being 1600mhz not the 800 that cpu z states they r .  this new stick must be ok for cpu z to know it is present and to  be able to give me all the properties of it so why is my computer telling me through the task manager that there is 1 of 1 slots being used when there is 2 psysically to be seen,  why does cpu z say there is 16 gb single channel installed when there is 2 8gb sticks present is that not dual channel?  and why when the sticks are 1600 mhz and the computer supports that would it be listed in hp  hardware diagnostic program as 1333 mhz there,  is there any place or support resource available that i could give remote control to a computer technician of some sorts that would understand what these problems could be caused by by having a look at all this differing information that i am finding here and there be able to get to the bottom of the root issue that is plaguing me and causing this to be such an impossible thing to figure out with my limited knowledge of anything advanced computer related  like this   i am almost at the end of my rope and the more i am able to find out the more impossible it is becoming for me to understand it all let alone to be able to actually resolve it in any way or form   any help is a godsent right now cause its getting more and more technologically advanced than i am capable of comprehending let alone actually resolving,

i almost am feeling that [content removed]would be the most efficient way to put an end to this cause i feel more and more helpless the more i am investigating and finding all these conflicting results from analysis i have done sofar  and it gets worse the more i dig here
