I have a Thunderbolt Dock (older model) that I cannot hook up to my new HP probook because the cable that is to be attached to the computer has too narrow a space between the flat and the round bits. Is there an adaptor available, or do I have to buy a new dock, which sounds crazy....

What is the product name and product number of your new Probook?
I notice that I do not see the Thunderbolt lightning bolt symbol next to the USB type-c port.
I see a DisplayPort icon, but no Thunderbolt icon.

That shouldn't be a problem because the current HP laptop I have from work doesn't have a thunderbolt picture either, yet the dock works well. The HP dock is the model Thunderbolt Dock 230W G2 . The old computer is a HP Elitebook, and the new one HP Probook 445 G9.

The old computer is a HP Elitebook 756 G6, but neither the old nor the new has the lightning symbol at the c-port, they have exactly the same symbols at both ports. The distance between the ports is just about 3 mm too wide on the Probook...

Doe the parts of the Combo cable separate or is it a solid unit?
Does the Combo cable unplug from the bottom of the dock?

Unfortunately it is a solid piece and it is not possible to unplug the cable from the dock. Perhaps I could try to plug in a port-c cable into the dock and then to the computer (there is a cable-c port in the dock, but it seems to be only for charging, has the lightning symbol on it) . I tried to do so with the cable from my phone charger, but it didn't work, but perhaps it needs to be another kind of c-cable, a data cable, I have to check and see if I can find one so I can try. And then use the computer's own charger to keep the computer charged. the current combo cable both charges the computer and forms the connection to the dock.

The USB Type-C cable should be a high quality one (Gen 3 or better).
Does the cable unplug from the dock?
Does your G5 Dock look like the one at this link? There appear to be distinctly different types that look the same on the outside , but have different cables and connections on the bottom.
