Hi @harry277,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand pressing the "A" key on your HP PC keyboard is not working correctly (e.g., it types the wrong character, types multiple times, or doesn't respond). Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot and fix the issue:

Step-by-Step Fix for Keyboard Key Issues

1. Check for Physical Obstruction

  • Gently remove any dust or debris around the "A" key.
  • If the key feels sticky or unresponsive, try cleaning it with compressed air.

2. Test the Key in BIOS

  • Restart your PC and press Esc repeatedly, then press F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Try typing in a field (like system name or password).
    • If the "A" key works here, the issue is likely software-related.
    • If it doesn’t, it may be a hardware issue.

3. Use On-Screen Keyboard

  • Press Windows + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard.
  • Click the "A" key to test if it works virtually.

4. Reinstall Keyboard Driver

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager.
  • Expand Keyboards → Right-click your keyboard → Uninstall device.
  • Restart your PC — Windows will reinstall the driver automatically.

5. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

  • Restart your PC and press Esc, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
  • Run the Keyboard Test to check for hardware faults.

6. External Keyboard Test

  • Connect a USB or Bluetooth keyboard.

If the external keyboard works fine, your built-in keyboard may need repair.

I hope this helps.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
