Common problems for Battery

Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I didn't know what board to choose, but lately my laptop's been acting weird about charging. I did the battery check on the hp site, and it said my battery was fine, so it must be the charger right?

What happens is this: I plug in my laptop and it starts charging, but then stops from time to time. If I then mess around with the charger a little bit (move the block around/replug it/etc), it starts charging again.

But it never fully charges my laptop to a 100% anymore. And it also shuts off before the little battery icon at the bottom right can even say "hey you're at 20%, maybe think about charging now". It used to never do that. I could always keep going until 5% and then plug it in to charge. Now, without warning, it just shuts off before the first warning.

Is it just my charger, or the battery (even though the check said it was fine)? And is there anything I can do about it or do I have to buy a new charger?

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

  • Did you try another charger?
  • Does the notebook shut down immediately (right after you unplug the charger)?
  • Do you get any error message on your notebook (Such as Plugged in, not charging, etc.)?

I have a few troubleshooting steps, you could perform to isolate the issue:

Run hardware diagnostics test on battery and Charger:

Use the following steps to open the Component Tests menu.

  1. Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.
  2. Turn on the computer and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second. When the menu appears, press the F2 key.
  3. On the main menu, click Component Tests.
  4. The Component Tests menu displays. Your Component Tests menu might be different, depending on the components installed on your computer.
  5. To run both tests simultaneously, in the Component Tests menu, click Power Source, and then click Run once. Each component can also be tested individually.

AC Adapter Test:

The AC Adapter test provides an interactive test to determine if the AC power adapter is functioning properly. A good battery is required for this test. Before running the AC Adapter Test, HP recommends verifying that your computer can receive power by connecting a known working AC adapter.

Follow these steps to perform the AC Adapter Test.

  • In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click an AC Adapter Test.
  • Click Run once.
  • The AC Adapter Test begins.
  • When the test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen.

Battery Test:

Follow these steps to perform the Battery Test:

  1. In the Component Tests menu, click Power, and then click Battery.
  2. Click Run once. The Battery Test begins.
  3. When the battery test is complete, the results are displayed on the screen. For additional battery information, click Battery Details.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

@Echo_Lake thank you so much for your reply!

So in the mean time I had bought a new charger, which still resulted in the same thing happening, so I kinda crossed out that the charger was the problem.

  • Does the notebook shut down immediately (right after you unplug the charger)?
  • Do you get any error message on your notebook (Such as Plugged in, not charging, etc.)?

For these questions I can say no to both! My laptop keeps going when i unplug it until the battery gets to right before where it's supposed to give off the warning that you should charge it. It does run out muchhh quicker than it ever did though. And it never gives me any error messages about being plugged in and/or not charging.

I just went ahead and tried your trouble shooting steps! The charger passed, as expected. For the power source test i got these battery details:

power source test resultspower source test results

And i also still did the battery test on its own after, which gave me these results:

battery test resultsbattery test results

From the weak(30), I gather that it probably isn't that good? Do I need to replace my battery? And if so, how and where can I find a battery I know will fit/work for my laptop? I have an HP Notebook 15-ay126nd.

Thank you so much for your help so far!

I replied already, but it was marked as spam and removed for some reason :(:( I'll try to rewrite what i wrote:

@Echo_Lake, thank you so much for your reply! Before I read it I actually went and bought a new charger and it has the same result, so I think the charger is fine.

  • Does the notebook shut down immediately (right after you unplug the charger)?
  • Do you get any error message on your notebook (Such as Plugged in, not charging, etc.)?

To these questions i can say no to both! My laptop keeps going when i unplug it, until right before the alert that's supposed to warn you to charge shows up. This happens waayyyy quicker than ever though. I never get any error messages about charging.

I just tried the troubleshooting steps you gave me and the adapter passed the test, as expected. my battery results for the power source test were this:

power source testpower source test

I also still did the battery test, but the details only had slight variations from the one above. I'm not going to add it in case this was why my reply got marked as spam.

From the weak(30) i gather it's not doing so well however? Do i need to change my battery? And if so, where can i find which battery fits/works for my laptop?

@Echo_Lake Wait I'm sorry, i don't understand to what part of my reply you're saying this to. What can they help me with? With finding the right battery?

Nevermind I think I found one that should fit. Fingers crossed. Thanks for all the help
