Thanks, that's what I thought. Ordered this https://www.amazon.com/Crucial-2x16GB-Laptop-Memory-CT2K16G4SFRA32A/dp/B08C4X9VR5/ref=sr_1_3  even though it was $30 more than the GSkill ram. Hopefully it will work.

edit- I looked today at the service manual provided earlier in this thread to find the part number for the second hard drive SATA connector but it wasn't listed. Anyone know the part number? These are a fairly new model line, so I assume it takes a while for parts to become available.

So far everyone who has reported has noted success on all Intel Core 7th gen and up and Ryzen systems with 2 memory slots using DDR4 memory with 32 gigs. 11th gen and higher have mostly reported success with 64 gigs. As far as I know there are no HP laptops with 2 memory slots that can use 128 gigs.

JUst to confirm this for anyone googling memory for this model, Crucial 2x16GB  CT2K16G4SFRA32A  DDDR4 3200 MHz CL22 works fine. Mine arrived the other day. GSkill Ripjaws Model F4-3200C22D-32GRS was not compatible with this model HP 17-cp0097nr.

Thanks for that answer.  Any Ryzen 5000 series users reporting success with 64G?

64G will NOT work

Just putting this out there for others with this series of laptops. I saw this in this forum, Run command prompt as admin then enter "wmic memphysical get maxcapacity" It will show you the max memory your system can use in kilobytes, mine shows 33554432 which is 32GB

I just realized it said the memory is "not customer accessible."   I'm guessing this is not true.

It's more involved than most laptop memory upgrades, but easy enough if you've ever done any laptop dissasembly.  The service manual is here- 17-cp0xxx Service Manual

Thanks both to you and Huffer, PBroussard, for answering questions and providing links.  I'm a software developer who needed a good but inexpensive machine.

I bought this one yesterday literally based on the help and links provided in the thread (along with some research at places like Passmark) I bought a TeamGroup 32GB kit TED432G3200C22DC-S01 for the Dell I'm borrowing to do professional work, and am hoping it'll work in the HP (if not, I'll buy the Crucial)  At $550 plus tax and shipping, I think it's a great deal provided one doesn't game or need a very color-accurate screen.

I sorta suck at the laptop disassembly, but can get through it, so I'm thinking I'll be okay.  Again, wanted to let you both know you were appreciated.  My last HP laptop was a great experience overall; I'm expecting this one to be no different.

Couple tips, you have to remove the long rubber pads on the bottom to expose some screws, use a pocket knife to pull the strips up initially, make sure you lift up the double sided sticky tape, if you just pull up the rubber part, the double sided sticky tape will get messed up.

Then remove all the screws on the bottom, and use a plastic cell phone repair tool to pry up the bottom cover off. It's not pried up from the bottom, flip it back over,  and you'll see a slight groove along the edge. You cqan use a pocket knife but you might nick up the edge. Once you get the bottom cover started flip it back over and finish unsnapping the bottom cover.

You are right on the pluses of this laptop, price point with a cpu and 17" FHD screen like this is the lowest I could find, with the IGP graphics I have no need for a dedicated gpu.
