hp laptop 15-bs015xd
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Ive been having issues with a noisy fan for a while. already opened computer to clean fan, disabled superfetch and updated many misc drivers. reset computer to factory settings. BIOS has not been updated, version is still from 2017, but im a bit too scared to update it and break my computer more.  I tried changing fan from "Always on" in Bios bootup as well as in system settings switched to passive.

in the past i was able to jiggle the laptop, restart, or tap the fan and it would stop for a long time, but now it is always on and very loud + some vibration. Real temp says it is at minimum temperature and still heavy fan.

PLEASE HELP!

also, will continued use kill my laptop? idk if i should just wait to buy a new fan and replace it...

Hi! @chloejanae,

Were there any recent windows update on the PC?

Don't worry updating BIOS would not harm your PC.

So try updating BIOS and Intel Thermal Framework Client Driver on the PC to the latest version using HP support assistant and check if it helps.

Refer this article to know more information about using the HP support assistant. Click Here

Also, try the steps recommended below.

Try restoring the BIOS to default.

1.    Turn off the computer and wait five seconds.
2.    Press the Power button to start the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key to enter the BIOS setup menu.
3.    On the BIOS Setup screen, press F9 to select and load the BIOS Setup Default settings.
4.    Press F10 to Save and Exit.
5.    Use the arrow keys to select Yes, then press Enter when asked Exit Saving Changes?
6.    Follow the prompts to restart your computer.

Check if allow this device to wake the computer is checked in Device Manager.

a. Click Start, type Device manager in the Start search box and hit Enter.
b. Select keyboard, it will display your keyboard, right click and select ‘Properties’.
c. Select the ‘Power management’ tab.
d. Check the “Allow this device to wake the computer” check box.
e. Repeat these steps for Mouse and Network adapters as well.

To properly ventilate the computer, allow at least 7.6 cm (3 in) of clearance on the left side
of the computer. The computer uses an electric fan for ventilation. The fan is controlled by a temperature
sensor and is designed to turn on automatically when high-temperature conditions exist. These conditions
are affected by high external temperatures, system power consumption, power management/battery
conservation configurations, battery fast charging, and software requirements. Exhaust air is displaced
through the ventilation grill located on the left side of the computer.

Lastly, try running a system diagnostics test on your PC and check if the hardware components on your PC are functioning correctly.

>Were there any recent windows update on the PC?

I dont believe there were any recent updates that coincided with the fan issue but I could be wrong, I didnt really pay any attention. i do know that I am up to date on all updates folloing system reset.

>So try updating BIOS and Intel Thermal Framework Client Driver on the PC to the latest version using HP support assistant and check if it helps.

I will try updating BIOS later, the HP page says there are 2 available versions, should I  just get the most recent one? Also I will attempt to restore to default first.  I checked the Support Assistiant for an Intel Thermal Framework Client Driver, couldnt find anything, says system is up to date.. am I missing something?

>Check if allow this device to wake the computer is checked in Device Manager.

should they be checked (turned on) or not? all are currently on.

Currently trying sfc /scannow in CMD prompt to see if that will resolve anything as well.

Thank you for they help, definatly the longest response I've seen on a fan issue during my research!
