Hi
After searching for many weeks , was able to find a new laptop for sale in Argos.
Paid £399 for my HP laptop. Collected today ( 16/11/2020 )
When opened - had the feeling not new - just didn't seem right , despite the outer box being fully sealed.
Booted ok - took a while to start , but able to set up laptop .
When it came to registering the laptop on HP website , I entered all relevant only to find the laptop is part way through its guarantee , having been registered on 01/09/2020
This has obviously been previously bought , registered and subsequently returned faulty , only for HP to refurbish and send back out of new .
Where do I stand - I could return it to Argos , but then be without a laptop again , I can't register an already registered product and if it fails may be at a loss .

Look at the serial number. If there is an R in it then it is refurbished by HP. If not then it is new or possibly 3rd party refurbished. You may be misunderstanding the warranty date. The laptop will be associated with a default retail purchase date. This assumes a normal time on the shelf with a retailer. If the laptop sits on the shelf then the warranty can appear to be used up in part. You actually get one year from first retail purchase. So the default date can be corrected. Are there physical signs of use?
Was the warranty setup actually telling you that you could not register it? Is the quoted warranty length at least one year?

You're free to do what you want -- but if this was mine, I would return it to Argos and raise hell with them -- big time!
Anyone can apply new tape to an open box and make it look like it's new. If the laptop really was new, it would have come wrapped up inside the box in plastic or something like it. IF it was just in the box and the box taped, that's a good indication they simply reboxed it.
It would not matter to me, who refurbished the laptop, if I thought I was buying a new one. -- and that's what you said "new laptop for sale", not "used laptop for sale".
IF they made a simple mistake, like sending you a refurbished instead of a new because they grabbed the wrong box, then they should be willing to replace yours with a new one at no charge to you -- including shipping costs.
But as I said, it is up to you ...

Last year, I bought a new spray gun from Home Depot -- and that box was taped, too.
Got it home, cut through the tape, took out the gun -- and there was paint in the container! Someone had used it, done a half-baked job of cleaning it, and took it back -- and probably LIED about NOT having used it.
When I showed it to the store manager, he offered me a new replacement -- at a serious discount!
So, if Argos is a reputable outfit, they will make this right with the OP at no cost to them.
