Envy
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Envy has two usb ports and a C port..    When i have things plugged into these, I get beeps,  which indicate that the usb  item has been connected. .   However,  the sound keeps happening - indicating to me, a dodgy connection.      currently, my mouse is in the usb port, and working fine.   HOwever, my external  hub is plugged into the c port and i'm getting constant connection beeps.  If i unplug it, the sounds stop and peace reins once more.     I am pretty sure that the connection isn't full, and that is why I'm getting these annoying sounds.    If i alter the angle, slightly, of the cable that goes into the c port, then the sound stops.      Sometimes its the USB ports that are causing the sounds.  It is very annoying.    Also, if the laptop is left idle for a few minutes, the same notification sounds start to play over and over and really annoy my family.   Can i turn the sounds off?

I reviewed your post and I understand that you want to know how to turn off the notification sound.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

  1. Select the Start button, and then select Settings.
  2. Go to System > Notifications & actions.
  3. Do any of the following: Choose the quick actions you'll see in the action center. Turn notifications, banners, and sounds on or off for some or all notification senders. Choose whether to see notifications on the lock screen.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

  1. Hi,  Thank you for your response but I don't believe that the sound is a notification from any apps.  It is the connect / disconnect bleep that you get when a port isn't stable and the connection keeps dropping in and out.    It doesnt' seem to do it while the laptop is in active use, but if i leave it for a few moments, and things become  inactive, then that's when it happens.   Normal notifications and  their sounds are fine - switched on or off according to my preferences - but this sound seems to be a hp issue as my son's laptop does the same thing.      Thanks again for your assistance -  I did follow your instructions to guide me to the settings, but they don't seem to be the right ones.

I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

Press ‘Win + I’ shortcut keys to open Windows Settings app.

Click on ‘Update & Security’, then go to the ‘Troubleshoot’ section from the left-side menu.

Scroll downwards a bit and click on the ‘Power’ option.

Click on ‘Run the Troubleshooter’. It will start detecting the problems and if it founds, go ahead fixing it.

If you continue facing the issue, then follow the below steps.

On your keyboard, press ‘Windows key + R’ and type ‘Powercfg.cpl’ in it.

Hit the ‘Enter’ key to open power options in the control panel.

From the left-hand side, click on ‘Choose what the power buttons do’.

Then, click on the link ‘Change settings that are currently unavailable’.

From the bottom given power button options, uncheck the ‘Turn on fast startup’ option.

Click on ‘Save changes’ button.

If the issue persists, follow the below steps.

Go to the ‘Start’ menu and type ‘Control panel’ then hit the ‘Enter’ key.

From the top-right filter, choose ‘Large icons’ and navigate to the ‘Power Options’,

Click and open the ‘Power options’.

Select the power plan according to your requirement and click on ‘Change plan settings’.

Click on ‘Change advanced power settings’.

In the power options windows, click on the button ‘Restore plan defaults’.

Click on ‘Apply’ and then ‘OK’ button.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Hi,

Thanks so much for your continued help.  I have run the power troubleshooter and the only issue found was that the display brightness was 'too high'.   I'm going to see if the annoying sound  is still there, and if so, will try your other solutions.

Thanks again.

So far, so good.  I have only completed your first suggestion of the three -  looking at the power options and am unsure why running that  troubleshooter  seems to have worked when it didn't find any issues.   I'm going to leave it a few more days before marking the issue as 'solved' if that's okay.   I don't want to jinx it!

Thanks again.
