Hi @Karl150,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Let’s walk together through some easy steps to restore your number keys to the correct characters. That unexpected typing behavior can be jarring, but it’s usually something simple behind it.

1. Check Num Lock

On HP laptops, pressing Fn + Num Lock can turn part of your keyboard into a numeric keypad, causing symbols or wrong digits to appear.

  • Press Fn + Num Lock once to toggle it off.
  • Then type numbers again to see if they’re correct.

2. Verify Keyboard Layout & Language

Windows might have switched to the wrong layout (like AZERTY instead of QWERTY), which can mess up typing.

  1. Go to Settings → Time & Language → Language & Region.
  2. Under Preferred languages, ensure your main language (e.g., English (United States)) is at the top.
  3. Click the three dots next to your language → Language options → check the Keyboard layouts.
  4. Remove any layouts you don’t use, leaving only the correct one (e.g., US QWERTY).

You can also use Win + Spacebar to cycle through layouts and make sure you're on the right one.

3. Run the Keyboard Troubleshooter

Windows has a built-in troubleshooter that can fix common keyboard issues:

  1. Open Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters.
  2. Find Keyboard, and click Run.

Let it scan and apply fixes automatically.

4. Update or Reinstall Keyboard Driver

  1. Press Win + X, open Device Manager → expand Keyboards.
  2. Right-click your keyboard → Update driverSearch automatically.
  3. If that doesn’t help: right‑click → Uninstall device, then Restart, Windows will reinstall the driver on boot.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi @Karl150,

Thank you for getting back.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Open Device Manager
    • Press Windows + X → select Device Manager.

  2. Locate Keyboard Drivers
    • Expand Keyboards.
    • You’ll see entries like:
      • HID Keyboard Device (for USB keyboards)
      • Standard PS/2 Keyboard (for PS/2 keyboards)

  3. Identify Which to Remove
    • If you use a USB keyboard, keep HID and uninstall PS/2.
    • If you use a PS/2 keyboard, keep PS/2 and uninstall HID.

  4. Uninstall the Unused Driver
    • Right-click the unused entry → Uninstall device.
    • Confirm the prompt.
    • Do NOT check “Delete the driver software” unless you’re sure you won’t use that type of keyboard again.

  5. Restart Your PC
    • Restart to apply changes.

 I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
