I have a question regarding upgrading the RAM on my HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cw1xxx. Currently, it has 12 GB of DDR4 RAM at 2400 MHz, but I am considering expanding it to 32 GB (16 GB per slot).

My concern is whether I can purchase DDR4 RAM at 2666 MHz or if I must stick to 2400 MHz. I’ve noticed that 16 GB modules at 2400 MHz are scarce and expensive, while the 2666 MHz modules are more readily available and affordable.

I would greatly appreciate your guidance and recommendations.

Hi, @cristhyancr7

Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook:

Maintenance and Service Guide HP Pavilion 15 Laptop PC

Chapter 1 has the memory upgrade info.

According to the service manual, the maximum memory is 2 x 8 GB.

You can run this command to see how much memory your notebook can support:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and press the enter key.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

You can install DDR4-2400 CL17, DDR4-2666 CL19 or DDR4-3200 CL22 memory which will all run at 2400 MHz or 1866 MHz depending on what processor your notebook comes with (see chapter 1 of the manual).

Suggested memory (if you can buy this in Peru) and if the report indicates you can install 2 x 16 GB:

DDR4-2666:

Timetec 16GB DDR4 2666MHz (DDR4-2666) PC4-21300 (PC4-2666V) Non-ECC Unbuffered 1.2V CL19 2Rx8 Dual R...

DDR4-3200 CL22:

Timetec 16GB DDR4 3200MHz (or 2933MHz or 2666MHz) PC4-25600 Non-ECC Unbuffered 1.2V CL22 2Rx8 Dual R...

Or:

Crucial RAM 16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL22 (or 2933MHz or 2666MHz) Laptop Memory CT16G4SFRA32A at Amazon.com
