so I bought this laptop on craigslist for cheap, because I needed a laptop for school, and fixed the screen up, and it worked. then over the summer, brought it with me on a trip to get some hw done over the summer. it was then that i noticed some keys wouldn't work the first few times i clicked them, but after tapping them a few times the worked, but it steadily got worse, getting to be that the only way to get them to work again was to reseat the ribbon, then it got to the point where not even that worked. after not finding any answers, and  desperately needing a solution, i ordered a new keyboard. it worked fine for about a month and a half, but recently i noticed a similar issue, but its a lot more random. the 1st keyboard, the keys 1,q,a,z, tab, caps lock, and tilde(`) (also when certain key combos were pressed, it would recognize a different key), but with the new one, the problem isn't that isolated. the keys that don't work are n,b,=,F8,F12,  and the 0, 7 and / on the number pad. I also recently came across this forum post, that had the same issue as my original keyboard, but for a dell laptop. I am fairly certain that it is a hardware issue, not a software issue, because it will sometimes work when I press down on a specific part of that ribbon under the space key. it will also sometimes work after vicious button mashing, but it only works for a little bit, if it even works at all.

I am on windows 10 64-bit

the laptop is the 15 inch bs015dx, with the core i5 7200U

so if anyone knows why this is happening, and if anyone knows the trace map for the keyboard model, so i can attempt a similar thing to what was described in the dell forum thread, your help would be much appreciated.

I'm also well acquainted with hardware, so I'm confident that I would be able to do most fixes proposed.

@emdo843 Greetings from the HP Community!

Did you check if the issue occurs on an external keyboard?

While you respond to that, here's what you need to do:

I recommend you attempt the below steps to identify the cause of the failure and resolve it accordingly:

  • Try changing the keyboard layout/language and check if it works: Click here for steps.
  • Clean the keyboard with compressed air (blow compressed air in the gaps between keys). This removes some lint and dust.
  • Shut down the laptop, remove the battery and cable for a moment, press and hold the start button for 60 seconds
  • Replace the battery, restart the notebook,
  • if the issue persists, perform an interactive hardware test on the keyboard using the steps mentioned on this link: Click here (look under "Running Component Tests > Keyboard test").

Let me know how that pans out,

@emdo843

Did you also perform the hardware test as suggested in the previous post? What was the outcome?

Let me know.

Yes. The keys still behave the same way that they do while in windows.

This looks like a hardware issue. I'd suggest you Contact HP in your region regarding the service options for your computer.

Have a great day!

Yeah, I know its a hardware issue. that isn't what I'm asking. what I want to know is what is causing this to happen, and what I can do to fix it, like the thread from the dell forum I linked in my original post. I don't need someone to tell me that its broken, because I already know that it is. so please don't post unless you have/had the same issue, and how you fixed it. thanks

@emdo843 You need to replace the keyboard assembly, since we don't have an option to replace specific keys as such, if you don't wish to contact HP support or if the device is not within the warranty anymore, you may order the replacement parts on the HP Parts Store, use the HP Parts Surfer to find the part number and If you've already looked for it and couldn't find it on the HP Parts Store, you may want to get it locally at the online store such as Amazon or eBay, etc...as the part numbers are universal.

I hope that helps!

If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.
