HP Pavilion Laptop 15-cc5xx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Im having an issue with my new pavilion laptop. I know its not made for games but i know with the nvidia geforce 940mx i should be able to play low to medium graphics games on low settings.  Even at games were it says it can run at high graphics  im getting sudden low fps.

The issue goes as follows: Start game>constant 60fps>suddenframedrop after about half a minute> its 2fps for about 30 seconds> game goes back to 60fps> cicle repeates

I think it might be GPU or CPU throttling, or some software related issue

things i've tried

- power settings to max performance

-installed new drivers

-set the max processorfrequency from my i5 to maximum in advanced power settings

note: i've downloaded a program  (speedfan) to monitor the temperatures in my pc, and it doesn't show the temperatures of the GPU.

Also my battery is draining extremely fast even in power save modus

@Yoeri23

Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. I came across your post and would like to assist.

I understand that you have an HP Pavilion - 15-cc555nr laptop and the fps drops while playing games. Fabulous analysis. Spectacular diagnosis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you for that. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps.

Does the fps drop with or without the charger being connected?

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

  • Go to Start Menu > click on Settings.

  • Type performance > choose Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows.

  • In the new window, go to the Visual Effects and select Adjust for best performance.

  • click Apply and ok...this should do the trick.

If the issue persists, The best way to resolve the issue is to follow the suggestions of the HP Guided Troubleshooter:

Click here to access it (simply select your description of the issue from the bottom of the screen to gain access to the next set of steps that should resolve your concern).

If the FPS reduces when the adapter is connected to the PC then please follow the below steps:

Right-click your desktop background and select NVIDIA Control Panel. You can also find this tool by performing a Start menu (or Start screen) search for NVIDIA Control Panel or by right-clicking the NVIDIA icon in your system tray and selecting Open NVIDIA Control Panel.

To quickly set a system-wide preference, you could use the Adjust image settings with the preview option. For example, if you have old hardware that struggles to play the games you want to play, you may want to select “Use my preference emphasizing” and move the slider all the way to “Performance.” This trades graphics quality for an increased frame rate.

By default, the “Use the advanced 3D image settings” option is selected. You can select Manage 3D settings and change advanced settings for all programs on your computer or just for specific games. NVIDIA keeps a database of the optimal settings for various games, but you’re free to tweak individual settings here. Just mouse-over an option for an explanation of what it does.

If you have a laptop with NVIDIA Optimus technology — that is, both NVIDIA and Intel graphics — this is the same place you can choose which applications will use the NVIDIA hardware and which will use the Intel hardware.

I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great.Keep me posted on the results. Good luck! 🙂

Thanks for the fast reply,

-the issue is the same when charging, however I believe de drops are less frequent

-the processor was on 100% a lot of the time so i force stopped some programs, but  the problem is still there

-I have changed the settings in nvidia control panel to performance the fps drops have decreased a littlebit, but they're still there

I don't think its the hardware, the laptop is brand new.

If my laptop wouldn't be able to run the games, wouln't the games run at a more constant low fps which is the opposite of the lag my laptop has?
