Hi @vkw46
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
It sounds like your HP Notebook's USB ports are operating at different speeds, which can happen due to hardware or configuration differences.
Here are some steps to address the issue:
1. Check USB Port Specifications:
- It's possible that the left-side USB port is a USB 2.0 port, while the right-side port is USB 3.0 or higher. USB 2.0 has significantly slower transfer speeds compared to USB 3.0/3.1.
- Refer to your laptop's user manual or specifications on the HP Support page to confirm the port types.
2. Update USB Drivers:
- Open Device Manager (press Win + X and select it).
- Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers and look for any devices with a yellow triangle (indicating issues).
- Right-click on each USB controller and select Update Driver. Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
3. Check Power Settings:
- Go to Control Panel > Power Options and select your current power plan.
- Click Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
- Expand USB settings > USB selective suspend setting and disable it for both "On battery" and "Plugged in."
4. Test with Different Devices:
- Plug different USB devices (e.g., flash drives, external hard drives) into both ports to confirm if the speed difference is consistent across devices.
5. Run HP Diagnostics:
- Restart your laptop and press Esc or F2 during startup to access HP's built-in diagnostics tool.
- Run a USB port test to check for hardware issues.
6. BIOS Update:
- Visit the HP Support page for your laptop model and check if a BIOS update is available. Sometimes, BIOS updates can resolve hardware-related issues.
If this solution hits the spot, please come back and click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left of the public post, as that would make our day! 😊
Take care, and have an amazing day!
