@connolly1961, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're experiencing irregular behavior with the touchpad on your HP Pavilion - 15-cw1511sa, even after updating drivers and installing a new battery. Let's go through a few steps to help resolve this issue:

Check Touchpad Enable Status

Sometimes the touchpad might be accidentally disabled.

  1. Press Windows + I to open Settings.
  2. Go to Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad.
  3. Ensure the Touchpad toggle is turned On.

Alternatively, try pressing Fn + F5 (or the key with a touchpad icon) to toggle the touchpad.

Reinstall Touchpad Drivers

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
  3. Right-click on the Touchpad device (e.g., Synaptics or ELAN) and select Uninstall device.
  4. Restart your PC. Windows will automatically reinstall the driver.

If not, you can manually install the latest driver from HP: Official HP® Support

Look under Driver - Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices for the latest touchpad driver.

Run HP Hardware Diagnostics

HP provides a built-in tool to check for hardware issues:

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately press Esc repeatedly, then F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  3. Select Component Tests > Input Devices > Touchpad Test.

This will help determine if the issue is hardware-related.

BIOS Update (if applicable)

An outdated BIOS can sometimes cause input device issues.

  1. Visit the Official HP® Support
  2. Enter your product name: HP Pavilion - 15-cw1511sa.
  3. Download and install the latest BIOS update if available.

Perform a System Reset (if all else fails)

If the issue persists, consider performing a System Restore to a point when the touchpad was working or a Reset this PC (keep your files option).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
