Hi,
I replaced my Athlon II P320 CPU with a Phenom II N970 and the laptop is randomly shutting down into hibernation from thermal overheating. E.g. impossible to run chkdsk or movies in full screen.
I followed all the procedures already described here, applying new thermal compound on the heat sinks, cleaning the fan, the fins, etc.
Is it a better fan/heat sink assembly for my model. I'd hate to have ti put back the P320 in. It's so slow that the CPU is almost always at 100%. Or is is some gadget I could use to force cool air into the computer fan?
Best.

Hi guys,
Replaced the Phenom II N970 (35W) with a Phenom II P960 (25W). No more thermal issue.
Thanks to all those who offered help.
This issue is now solved.

Hi,
Thanks but I've already mentioned that I had already read and followed all the procedures available on HP, youtube and elsewhere on the web to no avail. Some proposed solutions were just idiot.
Suggesting me to redo it isn't very helpful. This BIOS development has been stopped in 2011, the year the Phenom II x4 N970 was made available.
What I asked for is whether or not there were a stronger replacement internal fan/heatsink for this model OR an extrernal aid to force cooling. I've found this but I've not received it yet.
Cheers!

@patof6 I understand what you mean, the cooling fan from amazon looks pretty cool and I hope it works, that said, you could also try a few more steps from this article on reducing the heat inside the device: click here
Keep me posted if you need anything else,

Done all that mentioned in that article and more again and again. Most of it was either not working or useless or so obvious that I knew beforehand that it had to be done. Those instructions are not meant for computer tech savvy people and way too general.

@patof6 In that case, if the cooling fan doesn't do the the trick and the issue persists, I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options, follow the below steps to get started:
1) Click on this link - http://www.hp.com/contacthp/
2) Click on Sign-in or select the product using the below step:
3) Enter the serial of your device.
4) Select the country from the drop-down.
5) Click on "Show Options".
Fill the web-form, to populate a case number and phone number for yourself!
Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, if yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,
here's how private messages work: Click here for details.
If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.

Hi guys, some update here.
3 parts below:
1 - Ive received the opolar extarnal fan. It fits snugly. I've been able to perform a checkdisk for the first time since the 35W Phenom II N970 x4 has been put in it. Those are only preliminary tests. More to come.
It must run at full speed though. Automatic mode is useless. Will contact them for details. One has to select manual mode and the fastest fan speed (level 13).
Not bad so far, but not perfect.
2 - I'm eager to install that 25W Phenom II X4 P960 to see if there is notable difference.. Might take weeks/months until I receive it. It's a slower processor, but might fit in as a direct replacement, without any overheating issue. Future will tell. As usual I'll keep you posted. Some others might benefit from my experiences.
3 - BTW, technical enquiry here. Where are the CPU/moterboard temperature sensors located ? Might need to test/change them. Not normal to experiment a thermal shutdown around 90C. Maybe they need testing/replacement. Board is https://www.cafr.ebay.ca/itm/HP-Compaq-CQ42-CQ62-CQ62Z-G42-G62-Series-AMD-Motherboard-592809-001-TES...
HP.Part number 592809-001. I'm certain of that, it's my 3rd replacement.
And I do need an answer for that,
Best regards,
Marcel
