I'm wanting to upgrade the RAM from 16GB to 32GB. I currently have a 16GB stick and want to add another 16GB to the empty slot. The install would would be done at a local pc repair shop as I have no experience with hardware. Would doing this void the warranty?

We do not work for or represent HP, so we cannot respond on HP's behalf regarding the warranty terms and conditions.
What I recommend you do is to check the maintenance and service guide on your notebook's support page and see if the memory removal and replacement procedure is a customer-authorized procedure, or if it has to be done by an authorized HP service center.
For example, if you look at this service manual, there is a section for customer installs, and authorized service center installs.
Otherwise, you will have to contact HP customer service starting at the link below and ask a customer service rep if installing memory will void the warranty.
