When my laptop is in clamshell mode and rotated sideways, the keyboard and touchpad is disabled. This is not any behavior described in the previous link, and is completely insane behavior for any 2-in-1 to have.
A 2-in-1 in a laptop configuration should behave like a laptop and a laptop should not disable its keyboard based on its orientation. I have recently had my laptop's motherboard replaced, so the firmware should be recent, but I can check.
This issue has been raised here, here. and here without a satisfactory resolution.
A resolution would be:
- to please advise the appropriate team that this is an issue
- note that it has been already been fixed, in which firmware it is fixed and what steps to update the firmware
- a software workaround
- an acknowledgement that this will not be fixed
EDIT: The offending device is has HID "INT33D5" that reports SW_TABLET_MODE as 1 when in clamshell mode. If there is a software solution to determine whether the laptop is in clamshell mode or not, regardless of orientation, then that is fine too.
EDIT: I have found that the keyboard disabling happens when the intel-hid kernel module is loaded. The module reports the SW_TABLET_MODE from acpi calls, but as far as I can tell doesn't disable the keyboard directly. I have made a script for disabling this module in clamshell mode by reading the hinge rotation. Unfortunately it is also responsible for power button events, so my power button (except for hard shutdowns) will not work in clamshell mode.

Not helpful. Updated firmware just in case, but that's not the problem.
I have solved the problem for myself by making this: https://github.com/badly-drawn-wizards/unhinged
But I'd preferably like this fixed at the source rather than have a hack workaround.
