I created the USB Recovery Media for a HP Envy M7 and now need to upgrade the hard drive.  When I tried to use the usb drive it failed with a hardware fault.  Tried to created the recovery media again and it states it can only be used once.  Is there any way to reset this so that I can create the recovery media onto a new USB drive please?

Hi @ITSS007

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I acknowledge the situation with the HP Envy M7 recovery media. The recovery creation tool is designed to allow only one set of recovery media per system, so it cannot be reset to create another copy on a new USB drive.

However, HP provides an official method to obtain replacement recovery media when the original set becomes unusable.

Here are the recommended steps:

  1. Visit HP’s official Cloud Recovery Tool page:
Download and install the HP Cloud Recovery Tool on a working Windows PC.
  2. Connect a new USB drive (minimum 32 GB recommended).
  3. Launch the tool, enter your HP Envy M7 product details (Product ID or Serial Number), and follow the guided steps. The tool will download the correct recovery image for your model and create a fresh recovery USB.
  4. Once complete, use this new USB recovery media to reinstall Windows and HP software after upgrading the hard drive.

This process ensures you have a valid, official recovery solution without needing to reset the original one-time recovery creation tool. It is the supported way to generate new recovery media for your system.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
