Hi all,
I see many many views , so people are still interested in this lonely thread 🙂
Spent a few days getting errors in WER , so not gone completely , All for hppa service.exe has stopped .
I then thought I'd try running the battery totally out , all power saving off / sleep off /hibernate off till it auto shuts
down ,with battery at about 2%.
THEN , Calibrate battery , fully charge till LED goes orange / blue and turns off BEFORE restarting PC.
ERRORS GONE , ???? none ?? No EV or WER ?? 3 DAYS CLEAR a record 🙂
Hopefully this was it ,we will see 🙂

Oh well , I was getting hopeful 😞
WER errors still , but not every boot now, somedays I get no errors and then I will get the normal 4 WER errors usually just after boot for hppa.
So it's sporadic , but only at boot , haven't seen any recently during running.

Hi all 🙂
EV still has the occassional error , but not regular , however WER reports still appear on nearly every boot ,
and no response from HP since mid December , and that was to tell me they had forwarded the reports etc to Level 3 .
I guess HP Level 3 has either a huge amount of faulty PC's ?? or there is only 1 person there
Will update if they ever bother to fix this issue completely !!

Hi Dave,
Good to see that you are still posting to this thread.
I thought it would be a good idea to try the Beta BIOS but,
have you any idea if the Beta BIOS version F22 is only for the 8740w?
I find conflicting info when perusing the HP sites for information relating to the suitability of that BIOS ver. for other machines. Usualy a Beta BIOS would not be just for one machine but its a little risky to test without knowing that its applicable.

Hi Renamo,
Nice to see you are still following the saga .
The Beta BIOS has now been released as a normal one and appears on the download page for the 8740w, but if you look inside the files it shows it was made way back in June 2012 !!!! so why did it take HP so long to release it ??
Sorry no ideas if it will work on other machines , but you could try as these Elitebooks have a fail safe BIOS flash so if it goes wrong it can be fixed easily , by putting correct BIOS on a USB key and rebooting .....APPARENTLY...never tried it yet to see.
Though I would be tempted if I saw a BIOS MOD for 8740w that allowed an Atheros card to be used for the wireless , as I would love to try a HACKINTOSH on this but don't like the idea of using a USB dongle ( INTEL 6300 has no KEXT as yet for it , eg NO DRIVER ) turning it into a QUAD boot 🙂
Have just had a response from HP Tech asking if I still want to carry on with the case as it has been so long , as they are getting no responses back from Level 3 , are they taking the **** ?
Or is it a case of mess the customer around for so long he loses interest ?
So far it looks as though some of my problem was caused by the Dream Color screen , thats what the BIOS update was for , and now I have a wattage usage for it that reads correctly in HPPA .
Makes me wonder if maybe HPPA doesn't like the Nvidia 5000m Video card , as it's high spec and not many machines had this card , the Nvidia card also does not show it's usage in watts in HPPA ( Similar to the issue with the DC screen although that said it was using 26 Kw of power !! ) If so I doubt I will ever get a fix , as there are very few of us with this card , or is it the Quad core CPU as this shows no power usage aswell ?
I have returned an email to them asking if they could at least explain what component is giving me these issues with HPPA , as they have more than enough error files to look at , I don't think they will return an answer but I can hope.

Hi Dave,
That BIOS is not listed on the HP Business Support Center page for the HP ProBook 4520s Notebook PC.
All that is listed is:
F.21 (2012-06-14) upgrade from F.20 (2011-09-08) and
F.0F (68AZZ) (2011-02-23) upgrade from F.0D (2011-01-24)
Looks like I will have to get another HDD to make a full image of my existing drive before I try anything.

Hi Renamo,
BIOS flash will NOT affect your hard drive info atall !!!
BIOS flash will change the firmware that is stored on your BIOS chip on your motherboard , so if it goes wrong it will not boot past the initial HP INVENT black/white screen , make sure you fully understand how to do a BIOS recovery , I'm pretty sure that ALL Elitebooks have BIOS Recovery built in .
This means if it fails you need to put a USB key in to a USB port with the correct BIOS , and use a specific key press to initialise when booting up . I think mine is the Windows key and both up/down buttons all at the same time , then press power button to boot , it will beep and should show activity searching the USB drive.
However if you try and flash an incorrect BIOS it should also refuse to do it !!
I find it is always best if possible to flash from a USB stick as most flashing programs now allow you to copy your original BIOS before the flash , this way you have a copy ready if it all goes wrong.
PLEASE CHECK THE ABOVE BEFORE TRYING ANYTHING !!!

Hi Guys,
I have recently found out about this error- (i get it too!) i was just wondering if anyone else has had problems with the laptop freezing at all? I have a pavilion dv6 and it freezes... i have this error and a few more... do you think this could be causing the freezing?
Thanks, Matt

Hi Matt,
You are not alone mate, we have all had problems with this and HP seem to be dragging their feet trying to fix it,
Have you checked for a recent BIOS update as this seems to be the main reason people get these errors ?
Didn't personally get lockups due to this , but it seems everyone gets their own senario, with this as the main culprit.
HP have asked me for an image for them to investigate , as my issues have been going on for a year now !!
Even though I am an HP Business customer and pay a premium for my warranty , they don't move quickly , so if you are a std customer don't hold your breath for a fix to appear very soon.
The only other thing I can suggest is make sure your HP Support Framework and Support Assistant are up to date and ALWAYS remove any of these and use CCleaner , then do a reboot before updating as they are not very good at doing an inplace upgrade.
DON"T use HP POWER ASSISTANT it has many problems , if you have it loaded REMOVE it and see if issues dissappear!
Admin Tools in Control Panel ,Event Viewer , Administrative view will give you the best clues as to what is happening , remember to clear the view , reboot and check for new entries.
Goodluck.

Hi All,
Just thought I'd update whats been happening recently, HP asked for the Image of my drive to investigate ,
however no-one seemed to realise that this would span 8 DVD's and thats compressed !!
( Good Ol Win 7 !!! , bloated with winsxs files )
We even had an ftp link but 26GB on a 2MB down 432KB up DSL line would've taken a week .
So I suggested a USB Flash Drive to send the 26 GB image on , had to supply the flash drive myself as they
refused to , it will probably cost more in postage for them than it's worth when they send it back.
A Lexar 32GB USB 3 cost £15 in UK Retail , HP cost prob £5 .
However have been waiting over a week for them to send engineer to pick up , why they couldn't give me
a FREEPOST address to one of the UK Bases somewhere ? I have it boxed and waiting ?
On the brighter side MAYBE someone can eventually tell me why I have these strange error reports from WER,
even if I tell WER to ignore HP POWER ASSISTANT errors ?
At least we got them to release a BIOS update for the 8740w , that partially fixed the issues , think that other errors are being caused by the Nvidia card as power readings are not displayed for it. Not many had the 5000m card and thats
where the BIOS has a missing bit.
After HP have wasted my time again ( or maybe not ? ) looking at the image then I may try a fresh build from disc,
and NEVER load HP Power Assistant and see if errors go ! Now we have had the BIOS update.
Dave.
