Hi All
@Kohler-Schweiz
Please read Dink's post further up on this page. He clearly states:
"Go back to page 4 of this discussion , I have supplied the link for the ftp site that shows what models it will work on" That should awnser your question.
@Dink
Thanks for posting the info on creating the HP-Tools partition on a USB drive.
Read my reply from HP:
Hello Sami, I am afraid the technical side of the issue is out of my scope, I am not a technically educated person. As far as I understand, our L2 technical support have been involved in the case and have reviewed the issue and made suggestions as to what the problem is. (Without bothering to read this thread)
You do not seem to agree with them, is that correct?
Can you please tell me what your expectations are regarding the solving of this issue, and why you are not accepting our L2 engineer’s ecplanation. Thank you, I will be expecting your reply.
I do not have any ecpectations, as the L2 team has suggested I start from scratch, which has already been done by others with no success.
The idea of posting links from other forums here is good. It will kind of keep all eggs in one basket making it easier to follow. I do not see the piont of starting a new thread.
At this stage I will try to understand the terms in the error message a little better and post here if I find anything a value. Although I do not trust drive images 100% I might go that root and make one and then start from scratch just to see what happens. I can not deny that I am a little dispondent with this matter now.
That is it from me today.

@ Renamo3
Have you tried to load HPSF as an update and try the same way as I explained ?
Which errors do you still have ?
Images of partitions are ok as long as you don't have custom MBR's , if you are only running WIN 7 and not dual booting etc it is easy. Mine is a bit harder to return images as I Tri-Boot, but I just don't touch the MBR ,only each partition, as long as I don't have booting issues.
I only have errors now for HPPA , regarding calibration , that could be something to do with the " Failed to load Battery Protocol 2010 " and "SMBIOS" errors I found. When tech come back to me I will ask. I have no intension yet to tell them I have found a fix for HPSF or they will drop the case and RUN , saying resolved.I want them to fix HPPA aswell:smileywink:
So far this is only tested on Win 7 , I still have loads of errors on XP , but I am hoping to try this on XP later tonight.

I spoke too soon
HPPA still says " Data calibration in progress " but works showing power in use eg: 80 watts etc.But will not calibrate.
Haven't had a chance to do XP yet but this is what I've just found in Event Viewer on 7.
Here are the event logs only 2 but one from HPSF the other HPPA :

Hi all , been really busy over last week so not had time to play with this 🙂
But here are a few things I've tried with some positive results. I have tried this on Win 7 Pro 64 bit and XP Pro 32 bit now.
Not had anything back from HP Support yet and my Support Ticket still says " In Progress " .
HP Power Assistant did say " Data calibration in progress " but worked showing power in use eg: 80 watts etc
( Picture above shows 2 batteries because I have the C Shaped travel battery fitted as a secondary battery )
This can be fixed by recalibrating the battery , as follows :
NOTE : I have done this twice before once when I first got this up and running a couple of months ago and last month but it seems if you mess with HPSF and HPPA it gets upset and wants you to do it again , I think it changes the values that are held on the internal circuit on the actual battery . NOTE THIS INFORMATION FROM BATTERY IS READ AT BOOT,by BIOS as this is what produces the onscreen messages during boot , warning that battery is about to fail etc. I assume this is what the SMBIOS read errors I have occasionally relate to ?
Also a quick note for the geeks out there , use the "Battery Health Check" of HPPA in the Preferences Tab and use " Settings " button on the bottom left of this screen, change this to ADVANCED then it shows some VERY useful information regarding the battery , like how many times it has been charged and its capacity new and its capacity on last test etc in mAh.
( This can also be accessed via HP Support Assistant via TROUBLESHOOT / POWER, THERMAL and MECHANICAL and there is a link for BATTERY TEST. )
NICE 🙂
Remove AC adapter and run battery till flat ( also remove secondary battery if fitted ) , turn off sleep/hibernation/power saving etc so system crashes and battery is totally flat. Refit AC adapter DO NOT REBOOT let battery charge until Battery light on PC goes out, not just until LED goes from orange to blue ,this took about 1 hr. Reboot PC and the " Data calibration in progress " bit on the first profile tab in HPPA should have now dissappeared.
I also found a new HPPA version , 2.5.0.16 , on the US site , so I loaded it to see 🙂
Well everything seemed good no errors at first , no calibration bitz in HPPA , however still could not use the "Power Data " tab in HPPA and do the "Collect Now " button ,this returns an error saying Measurement tool failure , it does start to do the collection but fails after about 5 mins giving this error 😞 This is in a small box onscreen NOT an Event Viewer error.
So some advances but still errors, I have also tried this on XP and have identical errors , even with the new HPPA.
The link for HPPA version 2.5.0.16
The link for which systems it will work on ( probably not complete )
ftp://ftp-boi.external.hp.com/ftp2/pub/softpaq/sp56501-57000/sp56988.html ( This link is down )
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp56501-57000/sp56988.html
Also 2 errors below next pic have reappeared in Event Viewer , BUT they had completely gone for 2 days ????
NOTE : These do not appear every boot , as I originally had, so it is an improvement , they appear now after a few hours if left running but not doing anything eg : leaving idle or a failed boot eg : not even POST, nothing on screen , top keyboard lights all on / flashing and fan full speed but no further, a hard restart with pwr button solves this , but brings these errors up instantly ??
I wonder if this has something to do with HPPA and SMBIOS failing at boot time ?? ( Read earlier posts for more details on my SMBIOS initialisation errors / Failed to load Battery Protocol 2010 , in my HPBiosUpdate.log and SysDiag.log from HP_TOOLS partition )
I cannot get this failed boot to replicate , but did find this interesting post on HP SITE , when I get next fail on boot I will count flashes 🙂 , bet it won't do it now for ages as I want it , lol.
HP BIOS blink / LED flash codes , Caps Lock and Num Lock flashing :
HPPA :

So waiting now for Tech Support 2 to come back and give me some insight.
Well I see loads of views on this but nobody chipping much into the pot , please if you have any of these issues post a reply or give KUDOS on left , I want HP to fix this and the more of us shout the more chance of it being fixed. I see it is not only related to the 8740w many of the other Elitebooks and some DV and Envy Laptops have these strange errors aswell.
Dave.

Just an update , well got an answer finally back from Tech 2 at HP , unfortunately it was an email and not a phone call but here it is :
Dear Dave,
Thank you for contacting HP e-Solutions.
This e-mail is with reference to the case number: xxxxxxxxx.
I apologize for the inconvenience caused and we appreciate your continued patience and understanding in this regard.
I have received an update from our 2nd Level Technical Engineer, please follow the steps below and let us know of the results at earliest.
Since you are running running HP Software Framework 4.1.13.1, please try the latest version and one previous version of HP Software Framework:4.5.10.1 (9 May 2012) <ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp56501-57000/sp56878.exe>
If the Event Viewer still shows errors after installing the above mentioned HP Software Framework, please uninstall HP Software Framework 4.5.10.1 and then install HP Software Framework 4.5.1.1 (11 Nov 2011) <ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp55001-55500/sp55271.exe>
I request you to not reply to this email. Please update this case using the HP Support center (HPSC) web link:
My faith in HP Support is ebbing away , I do not hold any hope in them finding a real fix , I responded to them 28th May saying I tried the HPSF 4.5.10.1 and still had errors , they come back to me 2 weeks later obviously NOT having read my emails AGAIN and ask me to try HPSF 4.5.10.1, ARE THEY SERIOUS !
So it looks like we maybe left with a fix for HPSF that ONLY hides some of the errors ( admission by HP Tech if you read earlier posts ) and not removes / fixes them and HPPA not working correctly , I wonder if this all worked originally ?
Needless to say the email I returned to them on Support was not that polite, and I can't wait for the survey link they send after each support case is closed. I will voice my opinion and use the 2000 words !!
A very disgruntled HP customer.
06-15-2012 06:17 AM - edited 06-18-2012 01:35 PM
Well it looks like Big Brother is watching as my last post has been tagged by the MODERATORS !!
So I'd better post my recent findings before I get banned for voicing my opinion
Last night I found this log in Programs Data ( hidden folder in root of C ) it shows the fail reason for my HPPA , regarding the PMC data , I have forwarded this to HP Tech but they probably will not read it , if past history is anything to go by !! So I will post it here for anyone with any programming knowledge to peruse. Doing a Google search it seems that this PMC issue comes down to Perl or C# language error so its a program issue , unfortunately beyond my understanding OR is it SMBIOS issue ?

So something but nothing , a bit more of a clue to a very intriguing puzzle , but it still beats me how HP seem to not have a clue how to get their own software to work correctly, I could understand it if it were using microsoft programs and dll's , that after all DO change as updates are performed BUT these programs are ALL HP's , and so far the only fix they seem to have issued is a mod for HPSF that simply masks the errors from the user ?
OR is it SMBIOS issue ( which means my flash was bad , or the flash information was incomplete ? meaning a new BIOS needs to be made !! )
I did also find this on my HP_TOOLS partition it's called HpBiosUpdate.log and here is what it says :
00/00/2012 15:58:51 Failed Loading HP Battery Control Protocol

00/00/2012 16:01:28 BIOS Update Successful
So does this mean that the flash did not configure correctly ?
I quote ERICO from post / message 1:
I recommend that you uninstall the HP software framework and then reinstall it. Apparently the framework software is having issues reading BIOS information when Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) calls for it.
So here's hoping that the extra added interest in this thread will bring some resolutions to this
But I am not going to be holding my breath .

Hi all,
Well today had a reply from HP Tech , and I have to humbly eat my words 🙂
They are going to read my emails and have now involved Tech 3 , so we may have a resolution, here is my email.
...............................................................................................................................................
Thank you for updating the case xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
I apologize for the inconvenience caused, and the confusion and repeating of questions. There seemed to be a miscommunication between the 2nd Level Technical Engineer as we had provided him with all the e-mails that you had sent across.
As of now our 2nd Level Technical Engineer is consulting with our 3rd Level Technical Engineer for advise on this case so once there is an update I will contact you soon. Regarding the case closure, please be assured that the case will only be closed once the issue is resolved to your satisfaction.
..............................................................................................................................................
I do hope so as I love my new 8740w it is a far nicer machine than my 8730w but these annoying errors are spoiling my enjoyment and trust in my new toy 🙂
06-19-2012 05:48 PM
Thanks Dave,
Its nice to know you are still following the case , I see many people are watching as the views just keep going up and up , hopefully others will be able to use some of my findings for their own problem fixes.
I would love to know if this is just the Elitebooks and Envy laptops facing these weird problems , so if any of you watchers are logged in please post your Model , and the issue you have 🙂
Dave.

Just to keep all up to date , nothing as yet back from HP Tech 3 , but I just logged into my case and I see Tech have been logging in regularly and viewing my reports and updates I have sent them.So maybe they will finally find a fix for this ? It does seem they are trying to do something .
Here's hoping ,
Dave.
