HP Stream
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

I am at my wits end with this computer. For the life of me, I do not understand why HP even sells this thing. Let me first say, I LOVE this computer. I love the size, the keyboard...everything. What I DO NOT like is that I have a computer with a hard drive so small that Windows 10 takes up ALL the storage.

The last time I asked about this, I was told that I should be using "Cloud Storage" and "Office 365." Here is the thing...I am. I store everything on either a USB drive or One Drive. I also uses Office 365. BUT, in order to USE Office 365, you HAVE to download the program. You CANNOT simply go online and use it.

As of today, I have removed EVERY additional program I have downloaded but one on this thing. That one is necessary to operate my wireless card should our internet go out at home. I CANNOT delete it. I run Storage Sense almost every single day. Today, it told me it could find no more storage. I am wiping out my Download and Temp files daily.

Now, because my storage is so low, i can no longer see photo thumbnails. This is a HUGE problem as I need to see those to do my job.

I am the owner of an HP Mini 210.21 45DX. When I purchased this computer, it had a version of Windows that took up less space. I have never had a storage issue with that computer. My issue with that one is that the keyboard sucks (it is a replacement with weird keys in weird places).

I need to free up storage but I simply can't figure out what else to do. Oh...I do have Google Chrome because I can't stand Microsoft Edge...but the computer will not let me delete it. I have read that my answer is to return to factor settings and start over, but I REALLY do not want to do that...

HP...PLEASE...can you come up with SOME solution for those of us with the HP Stream. I am reading post after post of owners of this computer who are frustrated at the storage error messages. There HAS to be a solution.

You're free to do what you want -- but a factory reset will FAIL because there is not enough available free space to do that.

And, while you could do a clean reinstall, soon after, Windows Update will kick in and fill up the drive again, so you will be no better off.

Here are some things you can do to recover some of the disk space:

Also, the community Win10 Forums has the following suggestions:

Finally, there is a freeware app known as Wise Disk Cleaner. I use it every day to get rid of junk files: https://www.wisecleaner.com/wise-disk-cleaner.html

This is something to do with BOTH Microsoft and other vendors including HP. I do not know why you bought it in the first place. Probably you did look at its price and did not look further.

Anyway I don't know what is the model/product of your machine but normally Stream machines only have 32GB eMMC for storage, some models/products have 64GB and we can't replace eMMC storage because it is soldered to its system board.

You can't install programs and keep all your photos therefore the best option is to keep your files (photos, videos ...) on SD (or midroSD) card. Your machine should have a card reader slot.

Regards.

I wanted a small laptop that would be easier to use for travel. I have owned two other HP laptops with no issues. My last one was just very large and hard to deal with in tight spaces. So, yes, I looked at more than "just the price." As my post said, I owned another HP netbook that I have never had a storage issue with. It is the same size as this one and, naturally, I believed it would have similar operating capabilities. Yes, I saw the hard drive on this one was small, but since I store NOTHING on the hard drive, I was not concerned. Why on Earth would I think a laptop would have an operating system that would eat up so much of the disk space, you could do nothing.

I am not sure of the model. It is a Stream and I think it does have a 32 GB drive. I also know you cannot replace the drive.

I have no photos stored on this computer. I have noticed that One Drive seems to want to download them to the hard drive for some reason, but I have turned that function off. I store all my documents either on One Drive or a USB drive. My post did say that. NOTHING is stored on this drive. The only additional programs on this are Google Chrome and the driver for my wireless modem.

I had some other programs, like my budgeting software and a graphics program. I deleted both weeks ago. I don't understand why I am suddenly having a major issue with storage since this thing has been wiped down to its bare bones. Just this week, I have had a lot of system issues due to the storage problem. I have only had this thing since February.

I would actually like some tips on how to free up more storage. Again, I store NOTHING on the hard drive only on One Drive and a USB drive. I even delete all my downloads after I move them to other drives. The only thing I can think of is to delete Office 365 but then I can't use it...at least as far as I can tell....and that is NOT acceptable.

You know you have a room and you can't extend it. One option is to move everything out or clean the room and start over again.

(a) Clean the room: only you know what you need to keep, what you want to throw out. I can't help you with that,

(b) Start over again: Install FRESH Windows over the top using Cloud Recovery tool

Let me try this again.

First. I have been dealing with this issue almost since I bought this. On another post here, I got tips on what to do. I have been doing that. I run Storage Sense and delete other things periodically. That seemed to resolve the issue. I did move my accounting software to my other computer and that freed up a ton of space.

I have put NOTHING on my hard drive since the last forum post as I totally got that was a problem. Office 365, Chrome and my wireless card software have been on there all along. They didn't seem to be a problem. Running Storage Sense always resolved it.

Now, Storage Sense is not doing it. I ended up deleting a program I DID want in an effort to resolve it, but it is still showing a full storage. It seems crazy that I would suddenly need to reformat Windows when that has not been necessary over the past few months.

My question is where else can I look. I've emptied everything I can think of and deleted everything I can, but it is not freeing up the storage.

I don't need condescension. I don't need comments about why I bought this thing. I just need suggestions OTHER than reformatting Windows. If that is my only option, I guess that is it, but I think I must be missing something for this problem to have suddenly gotten to the point that deleting programs and using Storage Sense doesn't free up storage.

OMG! I just did two of the things you suggested and got almost 1GB of storage back! The Wise Disk Cleaner is AMAZING! I will be running that every day as well. Thank you soooo much! You kept this cute little computer from being a door stop!
