HP ZBook 15 G5 Mobile Workstation IDS Base Model

Hi HP Community,

I recently received an HP ZBook 15 G5 from an organization that used it for business purposes. It works fine, but the BIOS has an Admin password set, which is preventing me from updating system firmware or changing certain settings.

I now fully own this laptop, and I would like to either reset or remove the BIOS Admin password so I can perform firmware updates and manage settings freely.

Could someone guide me on:

  • How to reset the BIOS password officially?

  • Whether HP can help with an SMC.bin file or unlock procedure?

I'd appreciate any official instructions or links to get this resolved the right way.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @venom_123,

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

If your HP laptop is asking for a power-up code or password and you don't have it, you can follow these steps to recover or bypass the issue:

Resetting Your Microsoft Account Password:

  • If the password is for your Microsoft account, you can reset it using another device.
  • Go to the Microsoft Recover your account page and follow the on-screen directions to reset your password.

BIOS Password Recovery:

  • If the power-up code or password is for BIOS, you will need to reset or bypass it.
  • You can try the following steps:
    • Shut down the laptop and remove any peripheral devices.
    • Disconnect all external devices and power cables.
    • Try removing the battery (if the battery is removable) and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
    • Reinsert the battery and try powering on the laptop.

If this doesn't work, we may need to consider getting the device repaired, as HP doesn't set a default admin password. In that case, the system board might need to be addressed.
