Answer to your question: I don't know if you experience the same error when you try to update to a new W11 build in the future. It all depends on how much free space your EFI has at the time.

Apparently, a new build of Windows, when installed, tries to update boot system files in the EFI partition, and if it doesn't have enough free space, the update will be halted with the error being displayed.

This is a well-known issue, and Microsoft released this troubleshooting article long ago.

Only sure way to prevent this error from occurring in the future is to enlarge the EFI partition. There are many tutorials and videos available online.

@Butplug,

W11 25H2, when installed, tries to update boot system files in the EFI system partition (ESP), and if it doesn't have enough free space, the error you described is displayed.

Your ESP is probably 100 MB (you can find it in Disk Management).

The solution is either to enlarge the ESP or delete some files in the ESP to create more free space for the 25H2 update.

The same error was reported by folks when they tried to update to W11 24H2.

If you want to delete files in the ESP, see this post for the link to a troubleshooting article that shows how to do it.

If you delete the files and still see the same error, your EFI partition probably has an HP folder that takes up space that needs to be removed.

Thanks again for your prompt reply, followed advise with restart & repeated....success, (just for your interest): after closing cmd i opened the windows update screen which advised (UP TO DATE)  but underneath a message with yellow backgroung advised to download previous version of windows ? i checked what the current Win version was details below:

Edition                                Windows 11 pro

Version                              24H2

Installed on                     05/07/25

OS build                           26100.4946

Experience                     Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.26100.197.0
