@Rjones222,

Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query.

It’s generally recommended to turn off your printer, like the M140 W, when it’s not in use for extended periods—such as overnight.

Energy Consumption: Printers, even in standby mode, use some electricity to remain ready for use. Shutting it off can save on energy costs over time.

Printer Longevity: Turning off the printer when it’s not in use can help reduce wear on its internal components, like the print head and the motor. Keeping it on all the time can lead to unnecessary stress on these parts.

Prevent Overheating: Even when not in full use, leaving electronic devices on continuously can cause them to overheat, which could affect their lifespan. Shutting down allows it to cool off and rest.

Security: In some cases, leaving the printer on might expose it to potential vulnerabilities, especially if it’s connected to a network. Turning it off reduces that risk.

In short, unless there’s a specific reason to keep it on (like auto maintenance), turning off your printer when it’s not in use is usually the best practice!

I hope this helps
