I have put a clean install of windows 10 pro on this notebook. Initially it started up fine but then it seems after many microsoft updates, the machine now is sluggish. The mouse or finger pad is erratic and slow. I do not use it a lot but would like to keep it. This machine worked great up until about one month ago after some MS updates. I think that is the culprit but do not know how to get around it. Is there a version of windows 10 I can put in that will not update or are there drivers I can get to fix this problem as it is now?
thank you

In terms of Not updating, the answer is no. All Windows versions will permit Windows Updates and while those can be delayed, unlike with older versions of Windows, they can not be prevented.
Where did you get the install media to do the clean install?

Thank you for replying. I am a microsoft partner and downloaded it from my Action Pack as I did for other HP laptops we own. Others work fine and this one worked fine after the fresh install however it went south after a day and updates. I had this same OS on it prior to running into troubles so I thought a fresh install would cure it. I do see a PCI device with errors in the device manager. Maybe that is causing the problem but I ran all the Hp diagnostics and it did not find anything missing. It found firmware up to date and BIOS. I am pretty puzzled. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Have a good day,

As you probably know, HP laptops come preloaded with an HP OEM version of Windows, complete with custom HP drivers and Bloatware. When folks use MS media to do reinstalls, they fail to back off the HP drivers and thus have no way of restoring those. Does the Action Pack have those drivers included? If not, are you able to get those drivers from HP to update the ones on the laptops?

Quite frankly, if the Windows version is NOT from HP, I am very surprised the laptops even work. The MS media only install the generic drives that MS provides, not the custom ones that HP provides. This can be corrected to a minor degree using Driver Updates through Windows, sometimes, but I've never run into a situation where the laptop worked perfectly using only the generic drivers that MS provides.

If your PC is a 2016 model or newer, you should see if you can make a bootable USB recovery drive using the HP cloud recovery tool on a working PC.
The recovery drive can then be used to install Windows and the HP drivers and utilities that originally came with your PC.
You will need a working PC and a 32GB USB stick to hold the recovery files. Here is the link:

You use the Microsoft Store to download the actual tool:

If you use a different PC to run the tool, you will have to provide your PC's product number. Here is an HP link for finding that information:

Good afternoon, I got some bad news from HP. I put in my serial number and found out that this laptop was built in 2014 and warranty expired in 2015 so these tools are not going to work for me. I downloaded the recovery tool but it asks for my product number and that is where I have to stop since it is so old I guess. It is a shame since the overall condition of the unit is great and it is solid, just system software issue.
Are there any other ideas, recommendations or suggestions? Just asking.
Thank you very much
