HP Pavillion Laptop

Recently, I've reset my HP Pavillion laptop to factory settings. When reinstalling windows, the laptop has stopped at 64% and just kept restarting continously (and still is..). When booting up, the laptop shows me the HP logo with the loading icon beneath it. Then a black screen appears. Then, the HP logo with the loading icon appears again, but it says 'Introduction' beneath it. Then for a fraction of a second, a blue screen appears telling me it's still installing windows. Then it restarts again and does the exact same thing all over again. It's stuck at 64%, and it has been for many hours (well over 24 hours). I'm not sure what to do now, since my laptop is completely inaccessible.

 

Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated.

You should not have reset your PC.

 

Somehow, the Factory Reset has taken on the value of an Urban Legend that is a Miracle Cure for any ailing PC. Not only does it rarely fix the PC, if there is an underlying hardware issue with the PC, it will make matters WORSE by leaving the PC in an unusable state.

Even if there is NOT an underlying hardware issue, the reset puts Windows back to where it was weeks or months ago -- and this will then automatically launch hours or days of Windows Udpates that will bring your PC to a grinding halt, driving the processor up to 100% and the disk utilization to 100% as well. Both of these do NOTHING to speed up the PC.

The HP Factory Reset function relies critically on the contents of the Recovery partition being intact. If those contents get corrupted, which can happen either due to hard drive failing or due to Win10 Upgrade from an older OS, the reset simply will not work -- and will TRASH the PC in the process.

So, you go from having a SLOW PC, to having NO PC. That's not an improvement.

To check for hard drive failing, if your PC is new enough to support UEFI, you can use these steps to test the hard drive: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00439024

If not, you have to follow these steps:
1) Press Esc key repeatedly, several times a second, while rebooting the laptop. Do NOT hold the key down, just press it over and over.
2) Eventually, you will see an HP Startup Menu
3) press the Function key for testing the hard drive (usually F2) and let it run.

I used HP's Startup Menu to run some of those diagnostic tools. I did a 'Long DST' which failed. The error code is: GTQ82J-8SRA6V-MFPURF-618E03. Does this mean my hard drive is broken? I also ran an 'System Extensive Test' which gave me a warning, but only on the 'Optimized DST'; the Long DST from the SET passed. It indicated all other components seem to be functioning properly. I also ran a 'Short DST' which passed.

 

Some questions if I have to replace my hard-drive:

1. If I replace my harddrive (or have it replaced) will my laptop function again?

2. Which kind of SSD should/CAN I buy for my laptop?

3. If I replace it, how do I get back my factory settings/OS (Windows 10)?

4. How do I replace it?

 

I'd appreciate your help, seeing as I barely have any experience with stuff like this.
