This laptop came with Windows 8 originally OEM. I upgraded to Windows 10, which has continues 100% disk I/O issues. Tried everything and finally gave up. Attempted a factory reset, but it kept reinstalling windows 10, and it kept having the 100% disk I/O issues, even with nothing else installed.
So...bit the bullet, bought a Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit Retail key. Installed fresh. Now I am missing all kinds of drivers - wireless card driver, graphics driver, PCI drivers, etc. All "?" unknown devices in Device Manager. Luckily I do have Ethernet and USB working, so I can get to the internet that way.
When I look on HP's website, and enter my laptop, it lists drivers for Windows 10 and Windows 7. NOT Windows 8(.1). Basically says on there there are no drivers for that operating system. Which is suprising, since it came with that operating system out of the box. SO I am stuck.
Tried to find the hardware ID for the wireless card (Realtek), and downloaded the driver from another website, but still not working.

You're very welcome.
OK, so then you definitely have the synaptics touchpad system.
The only other suggestion I can offer for that, would be to try the driver directly from Synaptics.
I'd say the 3rd one on the list.
http://www.synaptics.com/resources
Graphics: Try this one first.
This package provides the driver that enables the Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. If high-definition multimedia interface (HDMI) video output is supported, this package also installs the HDMI Audio Driver.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp73501-74000/sp73572.exe
If that one doesn't work, try this one...
This package provides the Intel video drivers, control panel and display audio driver for supported notebook models running a supported operating system.

Hi, Mario:
You should be able to use all of the W8.1 drivers and software from the 17t-g000 on your model, except the BIOS and firmware files...
01-24-2017 11:57 AM
Thanks Paul - I attempted to do that, and I am not any further along. I am sure it's user error.
First of all, the laptop is a 17" touchscreen 17t-g100. Not sure if that is the same as the "17t-g000 CTO". Just wanted to point that out.
I have the following devices listed as "other devices" in Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit:
3D Video Controller
Network Controller
PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller
PCI Device
PCI Memory Controller
SM Bus Controller
Unknown device
Unknown device
Unknown device
Unknown device
I guess I have to take them one at a time. I'd like to get the wireless card going. I am assuming that is the "Network Controller" listed in the other devices above. When I click on that one, I have the following info:
code 28: drivers for this device are not installed
The hardware Ids are:
PCI/VEN_10EC&DEV_8179&SUBSYS_804B103C&REV_01
PCI/VEN_10EC&DEV_8179&SUBSYS_804B103C
PCI/VEN_10EC&DEV_8179&CC_028000
PCI/VEN_10EC&DEV_8179&CC_0280
Not sure what specifically I need to download, nor what I do afterwards? Just execute the downloaded .exe and then what?
Thanks for your help,
Mario

You're very welcome, Mario.
There are no touchscreen drivers per se--even if you were installing a supported operating system.
Start with these...
SM Bus Controller, PCI Memory Controller: Install and restart the PC.
This package contains the Intel Chipset Installation Utility and Driver for supported notebook models and operating systems. This utility enables the operating system to show the correct name for the installed Intel hardware in the Microsoft Windows Device Manager.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp73501-74000/sp73543.exe
3D Video Controller: If this does not install, then you need to install the intel graphics driver from the g000 support page first and restart the PC.
This package contains the driver that enables the NVIDIA Graphics in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71186.exe
PCI Data Acquisition and Signal Processing Controller, one of the unk devices:
This package contains the driver that enables the Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework firmware. Intel Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework provide system temperature and power utilization information for the system thermal protection to function properly. This package is provided for supported notebook models running a supported operating system.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71185.exe
PCI Device:
This package contains the driver that enables the Realtek Card Reader in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. The card reader enables users to read from or write to supported removable storage cards, which are typically used in digital cameras, digital music players, and cellular phones.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71189.exe
Network Controller:
This package contains the driver installation package for the Realtek RTL8723BE/RTL8188EE wireless LAN Controller in the supported notebook models running a supported operating system.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp70501-71000/sp70891.exe
One of the other unknown devices will probably need this driver...
This package provides the HP 3D Driveguard Software (HP ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection) for supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. The HP 3D Driveguard Software protects the hard drive by parking the heads if the notebook is accidentally dropped, or is abruptly impacted by another object.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp76001-76500/sp76484.exe
Please post the hardware ID's for any remaining devices that still need the drivers after you install this batch.

Hi Paul - working my way down from the top of the list you provided.
I ran the chipset file - SP73534.exe to get the names of the devices. After I ran it, I got the following pop-up window:
Intel(R) Chipset Devise Software
Failure
0x00004E2A The system contains devices that do not yet have official identifying display names, please use an NDA-configured release of this software.
In my device manager, nothing changes to my unknown devices either.
Thanks again for your help. Hope you know what this means...

Hi, Mario:
Unfortunately, I have no idea what that means.
Try the chipset driver directly from Intel. The 2nd file down on the left is the auto install file.
What model intel processor does your notebook have?
01-24-2017 04:00 PM
Paul - thanks for sending. We are making progress! I now have only 3 "other devices" left. Two of the three are still "Unknown device", though.
Here is what I have:
1. PCI Simple Communications Controller. If you remember, I had two of these when I started, and one disappeared with one of the .exe files you sent a link to.
This one is listed as: PCI/VEN_8086_9D3A&SUBSYS_80A5103C&REV_21
2. Unknown device. The Hardware Ids are something I haven't seen before:
ACPI\VEN_INT&DEV_0E0C
ACPI\INT0E0C
*INT0E0C
Looked that one up. Appears to be some kind of Software Guard Extensions driver, but can't find the file...
3. Unknown device. Hardware Ids:
ACPI\VEN_HPQ&DEV_6001
ACPI\HPQ6001
*HPQ6001
I looked that one, and apparently is an HP Wireless Button driver. Downloaded sp58720.exe and that took care of it. So solved!
Realy appreciate your help and your responsiveness today. I don't even want to tell you how much I have been struggling with this. You keep this up, and I am going to have to buy you a Christmas present 🙂

You're very welcome, Mario.
The 1st one needs this driver...
This package provides the Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI) Driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems. The Intel Management Engine Interface enables communication between the host operating system and the Intel Management Engine firmware.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp71001-71500/sp71183.exe
ACPI/INT0E0C: There is only a W10 driver for that device. You can try it and hope it works...
The package provides the driver that enable The Intel Software Guard Extensions Device (SGX) in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. Intel SGX are the Intel Architecture extensions that provide increased security of software by sealing legitimate software inside an enclave and protecting it from attack by malware.
File name: sp72871.exe
You may want a newer version of the wireless button driver. The one you found is pretty old...
This package provides the driver for the HP Wireless Button on supported models running a supported operating system. HP Wireless Button allows the physical (hardware) wireless radio button on the system to enable and disable the wireless connection on the system.

Good morning.
The good news is that I have only one "unknown device" left in my Device Manager - the PCI Simple Communications Controller"
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_9D3A&SUBSYS_80A5103C&REV_21
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_9D3A&SUBSYS_80A5103C
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_9D3A&CC_078000
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_9D3A&CC_0780
I tried to run the intel file SP71183.exe, but it halts. The message I get:
The setup program ended prematurely because of the following error:
This platform is not supported.
All in all, the laptop is running well. I do have two things I have noticed:
- I can't adjust the brightness. When I go to SETUP, I have the brightness icon grayed out, and my F2/F3 function keys don't work either. I read that this is likely due to the graphics driver???
- I can't use two fingers on the touchpad to scroll down. Not sure where to adjust that, but I know that was working before. Minor thing, more of a convenience.
Thanks again for all of your help. Definitely a much more at ease system vs. Windows 10 I had running on this machine. Disk I/O is averaging about 5% as opposed to the constant 100% before.

Good morning, Mario.
Try this IMEI driver...
This package provides the Intel Management Engine Components Driver for supported notebook models running a supported operating system.
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp76001-76500/sp76159.exe
I see within the driver file it shows support for the hardware ID you posted.

Now as for the touchpad, you should be able to use the W10 driver from your notebook's support page. I have found that the touchpad driver has the drivers for W7 - W10.
This package provides the driver that enables the Synaptics TouchPad in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system. The driver enables general touchpad functionality (for example double-tap and scroll) and provides a user interface.
http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp72001-72500/sp72097.exe
Brightness...sounds like a no graphics driver issue to me as well.
Go to the device manager, click to expand the display adapters device manager category.
You should be seeing an Intel HD graphics adapter and a Nvidia graphics adapter listed there.
If you see a Microsoft Basic Display Adapter listed in place of either of those two adapters, then one of them needs the graphics driver installed.
