Thank you and I am very sorry for not listening more.

I think me getting out of the hospital and being frustrated got the best of me and again, I am truly sorry.

I hope you accept my opology...sorry for my spelling as well!

I did start re-reading what you said and I maybe just did not know what I was and still am doing.

About the only things I know how to do are upgrade my ram and unplug the hard drive and turn it back on.

I frankly was going to give up until I read a few days ago about unplugging the hard drive etc.

I did read almost all of your reply's tonight thank you.

I noticed your link for a hard drive for about $42..Please don't I need a 7200 rpm?

Also when I gave up on this laptop, a friend gave me a desk top that needs a few parts to get it running along with the window 7 recovery disc.

If I buy it can I use the same one for both my laptop and this desktop?

Also when I was at a computer service place about 6 months ago, they put all of my information on a memory stick and gave it to me.

Again, me being me, did not understand what that can do for me and still do not know.

Would you see past my mistakes and please try to help me further.

I am sorry and can be a grumpy old man.

I wish I was more of an expert with these problems but I have learned a lot over the past several months.

Taking the time to learn these things and try and find money and odd jobs at my age is very difficult but that should not be my excuse.

Thank you Cheryl !

Sincerely,

I know the struggles of dealing with a failing laptop and not having the knowledge or skills can be frustrating. That is why I devote a lot of my free time here to volunteer help to those who ask. But, try to understand- it also gets frustrating spending time trying to explain in detail, posting links to what a person needs and be completely ignored and told what the person thinks they need.Sigh.

But,we shall start over.Apology accepted and I apologize for eventually just giving up and not answering any more questions-but I decided it was leading nowhere.

As for the $42 hard drive or a better one-I found a less expensive one trying to help you save money. I also posted a link to a 7200rpm hard drive in a later Reply. Either will be fine- a 7200rpm is a little faster. You insisted several times that you need an HP OEM hard drive.HP does not even make hard drives-they use various manufacturers hard drives.

As for the desktop you mentioned- No, recovery discs will not work on both machines.

Since you did manage to unplug the hard drive- it doesn't take much more to remove it and install the new one. Your Service Manual shows hwo:

Thank you for responding again! 🙂

My hd is a Seagate but you see, I did not know anthing about hd's.

Again, I'm learning!

I think I could buy oem parts but mostly not internal computer parts just cosmetic parts.

If you have time in a few days, would you educate me about the memory stick that the guy at the computer place said he saved stuff from my laptop but did not explain. Would you give it a guess?

And please let me know if I buy a recovery windows 7 disc if I can use it for my laptop if necessary along with the desktop I am putting together or is it only good for one computer?

Thank you very much and I hope you are sleeping as your time is 3-4 hours behind mine and you replied quite late tonight.

Thank you,

No, recovery discs will not work on both machines. I thought you made your Recovery Discs before the hard drive died completely? We discussed that earlier in this post.

The memory stick probably has personal files he knew you were going to lose when the hard drive died. When you get the hard drive replaced and Windows running you can plug it into usb port and open it to view files and copy them to the new hard drive.

And -yes it is very late here so I am offline for the evening.:)

No I am sorry as I did not know or understand what I was saying about backing up.....

I am still learning but fortunatley I do not have any important items on my laptop.

I still do not understand what will happen when I change the hd.

I have no back up and as you mentioned the guy just saved some files probably so what will happen when I buy a hd and put it in? Wait and see? Or have a recovery disc ready to do the instal?

Thank you!!

Hi Cheryl,

Thank you for all of your help.

I went out and bought a new hard drive, installed it and my laptop works!

I did however have to install Windows 7 Home Premium using AOL GOLD MEMBER UPGRADE!!

I HAVE HAD AOL FOR FREE FOR 20 YEARS AND NOW I HAVE TO PAY $5.00 PER MONTH TO BE ABLE TO BOOT UP WITH AOL GOLD PREMIUM UPGRADE... WHAT A RIP-OFF!!!

YOUR THOUGHTS PLEASE?

YOU HAVE BEEN A VERY GREAT HELP!!! CHERYL!!

THANK YOU,

MIKE R. SUNSETMR

That does sound like a rip-off.You are essentially renting from AOL? I would not allow AOL software anywhere near a computer I own- never have ,even before they started charging.

You do know that you can login to AOL email using a web browser? No need to install that bloat they call software. Go to AOL.com and click on Email in left sidebar. Login with user and password- your email!

Yes I am fully aware of this. Howver, the new upgrade is easier, better but not worth the money, but I am a sucker..

FYI, I was told that the 5 is for all of my computers and I am now looking to have 3 operational computers with my name.

In this day and age not having a back up computer is not a good idea.

Do you have any more suggestions, thoughts, directives for me?

Anything at all would be helpful as I am learning everything the hard way.

Thank you,

No more tips-other than don't install that bloatware of AOL on the machines. My sister used it for years and everytime I turned around she had a crash or something going on. I finally convinced her to leave off that software -if she wanted me to help her.

She learned that one the hard way- dealing with crashes and losing files before she finally agreed to stop installing the bloatware.
