I'm a refurbusher and I go through a lot of HP's that have a locked BIOS. For what ever reason, I have NEVER gotten a 9470m to unlock with a SMC.bin file. I regularly unlock 8470's, 650 and 840 probooks, workstations, and the similar Folio 9480m but never the 9470. I use the same formatted USB in all my testing and make sure that the date in the BIOS is correct but the HP provided SMC.bin never works with this model. I triple check my S/N's and UUID's but nothing. It's always just the 9470m that refuses to work. Support alwasys give's me the same line with the hundreds of Folio's I work with, " Your mobo is broken send it in."

What gives?

Could you elaborate on what exactly fails with this model ?

They just don't seem to recognize the SMC start up command at all and boot up normally. No "SMC command failure" message or anything of the sort.

I just opened one.

Thank you for the updates.

I am sure you may be familiar with the instructions and the steps, but just in case, please check again the instruction so that you are 100% sure you do it the correct way >> https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebooks-Knowledge-Base/Forgotten-BIOS-or-power-on-password-HP-Commer...

Have you tried performing the steps using an external USB keyboard ?

If nothing helps and you continue to see the "SMC command failure", check with the HP Support.

If you are no happy with the resolution, please post again here and I might check something else.

As I said I am very familiar with the process. I've worked on hundreds of models. It is specifically the 9470m's that do not work for whatever reason.

I have tried using external keyboards but that doesn't work. I can verify the USB port works by using a bootable OS but the SMC.bin command doesn't launch.

I need to specify. At no point did I mention seeing "SMC command failure". That would emply that it registered the SMC command but something like the S/N or UUID was incorrect.

I'm talking about it completely ignoring it entirely. No error, just a normal boot process unaffected by the USB with the .bin file. Like it's not even registering it. Again, only on 9470m's.

Well my ticket to HP Business Suport has just been closed with no resolution even attempted and this forums is now a graveyard. Typical HP. Just ignoring all of their issues.

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact. Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

If you are unfamiliar with how the Community's private message capability works, you can learn about that here.
