HP Pavilion 15-CC593ND
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi, i recently bought this laptop and i like almost everything about it. The fairly quick CPU and dedicated GPU make it suitable for light gaming, which is what i want to do with this laptop. The games i play (for example Heroes of the Storm and Hearthstone)  run really great (~60/70 fps) and look nice on medium settings.

However, after i play a game for a couple of minutes, the laptop suddenly throttles the CPU and GPU down to a crawl.  I've checked this in Open Hardware Monitor. For example, the GPU is clocked down to 135mhz. It makes the game go down to 10 fps, hardly playable! After 30-60 seconds, the components go back up to their normal speed and the game runs perfect again. The laptop doesn't even get close to warm, so i really don't see a reason for the laptop to cripple itself so much!

An HP support employee updated the BIOS; this seemed to have made the throttling a bit less but it's still there way too often (every 1-2 minutes).

It's a true shame that this awesome laptop gets crippled so much; it has way more potential! It would be great if a BIOS-update could be released that either reduces throttling greatly or gets something like a Performance Mode where throttling is disabled alltogether. Of course, within the temperature limits of the components, but the laptop could easily get a bit warmer in this mode.

Thanks for listening!

I totally agree with eveything Tukk said, i bought the HP Pavilion 15-CC593ND a few days ago, and apart from the throttling its an amazing laptop.

I can back the fact up that the laptop does not get hot at all and the throttling feels very unnecessary and crippling.

Good to see i'm not alone!

I did some more research; it could of course be an issue that could be resolved with a BIOS-update, but also this piece of software might be part of the problem/solution:

Hi!

Switching back go English so the HP Support can read with us. For their information: the replies that are in Dutch are about people suggesting some workarounds in an effort to keep this laptop from throtting on very low temperatures.

@HvdWal: No, sadly i don't have any news about this issue. My latest contact with HP chat support resulted in them asking me to return the laptop under RMA, but that - of course - won't help since the throttling is intended or at least designed behavior.

I'm afraid our only chance is in HP releasing an update to either the BIOS or the Driver for Intel Dynamic Platform- andThermal Framework-client. My best guess is that either of those would be the solution. This is what i asked HP support to pass on to the developers. Who knows! It might help if you do the same.

Regards!

Update: there are still no bios- or chipset updates available from HP.

If there is anyone from HP reading this: please reach out to department responsible for this issue! The laptop can run a lot hotter so throttling occurs less fast/frequently. You could even make this a 'choice' by enabling the higher throttling threshold only when Windows 10 Game Mode is enabled, for example!

Still no solution to this? I am suffering from the same issue and it is really annoying as the NVIDIA 940MX is otherwise a very decent GPU...
