Hoping this helps someone ..

Think I've got this one solved.

Issue may be a fault with from Intel's HD GFX card communicating with the default BIOS.

Just bought a new 4540s (i7 3612QM, 4GB, Radeon 7650m, etc).

I'd set all the power options to maximum performance, as described in this topic already.

However Passmark was only giving GFX bench's around the HD 4000 mark (eg. <> 400).

Radeon 7650m should be returning scores around the 700+ mark.

(easy test, if your only scoring <>400 your 7650 is not kicking in)

Also noted the HP manual says the descrete card is only instigated in full screen applications, but still no go.

Out of the box the 4540s laptop comes with BIOS F.01 (68IRR).

Download BIOS F4.0 from the HP site (select 'driver downloads', search for 4540s, ensure you get the F4.0 BIOS)

Out of the box the 4540s comes with an ATI driver dated xx/03/2012.

Download the AMD / ATI xx/05/2012 driver from the HP website.

(ie. dated May)

Install the BIOS first.

- ensure your connected to mains power and shut down all other apps.

- double click the file in windows

- Read the blurb and ensure it's the 68IRR BIOS (for a 4540s system)

- click next next next

- system will restart

- the BIOS update screen will pop up, leave this until it's finished

- Windows will fire up but then want to restart, so restart accordingly

- Press F10 on this restart and check that the BIOS is now F 4.0

Then install the AMD GFX driver

- ensure your connected to mains power and shut down all other apps.

- double click the file

- Select 'Express install'

- the screen will go black a few times, just let it do it's thing

- restart the laptop after the install finishes

- after the restart right click on the catalyst icon and goto the options and ensure it's set to 'Maximum performance' (it defaults back after the install)

Running Passmark after these updates returned a score > 700 .. ie. hello Radeon goodness.

Note that the GFX card may still be detected / displayed as a HD 4000 during passmark tests.

My Toshiba L840 with a 7670 did the same, but the scores should be way above anything a HD 4000 can produce, so this may just a 'feature' of the descrete GFX card.

Good luck

.. and now for my rant ...

Seriously .. HP .. **bleep** !??!

Yes this may be an Intel issue and I understand that you may be waiting on drivers from them to resolve it, but seriously these guys in the forums are bleeding out there and asking you for help.

I saw few if any responses from HP even though there are countless queries and calls for help regarding this issue.

It wasn't just isolated to the 4540s either as DV6 systems got the same thing.

This falls into the 'not good enough' basket for me, especially since a 'Pro-book' is aimed at pro-sumers and the corporate market .. and seriously businesses do not have time for this crap on an 'out of the box' system.

I'm a Toshiba man and have been for years, and manage a fleet of 70+ Tecra's and Portege's at my work.

We took a plunge on the 4540s because, at the moment Toshiba have lost the plot and the HP looked like a great all rounder .. especially the screen, keyboard, build .. and the FREAKIN AWESOME access to the memory and internals (seriously, hats off for that).

This is a good product but the implementation and support was 2nd rate.

So .. something to improve on.

Hi everyone,so my problems is like the rest.I have HP Probook 4540s i5 3230m ,Intel 4000 HD and ofcurse 7650m which is now becoming legendary 🙂

This is my story so far;
-Since i got Windows Ult 64bit i downloaded from HP support the drivers for AMD,INTEL in the section graph..and i downl the BIOS 4.

-I Updated the BIOS which was ezy.

-So far installed the AMD drivers, and on Divice Manager it is displaying the ATI 7650m  with a yellow mark (stateing;Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) ).Alsow in the device manager where the INTEL 4000 HD place was is now located Standard VGA adapter.
-Although it is specified in the AMD HP support part that in this driver instal are drivers for AMD and INTEL it has not installed the INTEL part.
So now we come to the part where i downloaded the INTEL drivers too.I started the installation but it says my system req are too low.Which is tottal BS..

The only time my graphic cards did work was when i updated them with the help of Driver Genius software, but i didnt get it to work the switchblade thing..If amd can put out every 3 month new soft for graph, why is it hard to make one with one button that stayts..i WANT this card ON/OFF (i mean the ATI 7650m)..but it's been over a year and no support on this matter..And i see that this topic has like 35 000!!! views.Thats a lot this is a poppular laptop..now give us some support..pretty plz.

 ***********************       UPDATE      ************************

So i got it finally working, with a great help from @Sh0ck-Wave and  @Ferrus guide's from this forum post's to which i want to express great gratitude guys, and i KUDOS to both of you.
After some tweking all i can say is that each system is specific in it's own way,and i will post a detail guide about my situation.

-I knew from the beginning that the HP support site drivers where out of date and i was very sceptical towards them.
I installed the AMD 440mb package from HP support site for my respected system. But it never installed for me the Catalist Controll center as Ferrus descibed in his guide..plus it didnt install the INTEL drivers as it clamed. And the INTEL drivers on the HP site said i had to low systme requ (which was not true).

-So i uninstlled everything i could from my PC that i could find from the HP support drivers.
This is where i stepd in with @Sh0ck-Wave guide..i downl the BIOS 40 from the HP support site and it went all well.
I borrowed my friends software Driver Genius (version 12,it's very important to have the newest edition),It found me the respected graphics software,on AMD site the new drivers for ATI 7650m,and on INTEL the drivers for the newest edition of HD 4000.I instlled both of them, the order of which are instlled is of no matter.

-After the installation was completed i used @Ferrus  guide about the Power tweaking.
and the finall step i instlled @Sh0ck-Wave Performance Test software to see if it will work, and it did.

TO PROVE WHAT I AM SPEAKING IS THE TRUTH I WILL POST A PRINT SCREEN PIC:
undefined

You can see clearly the date, and the rating system that  @Sh0ck-Wave was descibeing in his post. The ATI scored 770 and the HD 4000 is at 440 score.
It all comes to the tweaking part.I wish everyone good luck, and i hope that i helped someone.

HP ProBook 4540s, i5 3230M 2.6Ghz, 8 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD, Intel HD 4000 & AMD Radeon HD 7650M, Windows 8 x64.undefinedundefined

I have the same problem, but after I have done all that Blurey said, the result was not what I expected.(I have updated to the latest driver versions from Intel and ATI).

PerformanceTest gives me a score of 533, which is slightly greater than the Intel HD 4000 score.

All the settings are made to "Maximize Performance".

In addition to the problems I already had, the Windows Experience Index fails with an error when I try to Re-run the assessment.

undefined

And all the default apps from Start panel are showing a "black screen" when I launch them.

I think I must go back to HP drivers for both graphic cards.

Onestly, all I want is to control which graphic card is used by my laptop.

Is there a way for disabling Dynamic Switchable Graphics and enable Fixed Switchable Graphics?

Or any other solution that gives the user the decision over his computer? :robotmad:

Thanks!

@Iilian67 Pretty mutch your specks are the same as mine apart of the system,i have Wind 7 Ulty x64.I used both guides from the respected persons on this forum, but as i said i had to combine them and a littel something of mine to get it to work.

-And the Windows Experience Index fails on me to.
-Did you update the BIOS? from Hp Support site?
-And what i could have gather the info about switching your graph in BIOS on the net is,that for the 4540s this option does not exist yet, even with the update. But if you have skiped the update on BIOS,try that.

Yes, the BIOS update was one of the first steps.
I decided to restore my laptop to factory settings and leave it with its "self decision" style.
Maybe there will be an update to fix this behaviour.
Thanks a lot!

Sadly we all are waiting for that to happen 😞

But it will deffintly kick in if you have a battery and unplug it from the AC.Even with everything on random.

Honestly i need a real game to get this one a good test.Cuz i got a fair doubt's too, everything was so called improvized.

But if we have a big voice in this thred they maybe hear our plea.

I've done everything posted in this thread to fix this problem, and it's still apparent to my computer that the only graphics option it has is the Intel HD 4000.  Has there been a fix to this yet?  Are we waiting on HP for new drivers etc.?  Should I just jump off a bridge (by which of course I mean 'play BioShock Infinite on Very Low graphics') right now?
