Hi,

My problem is how can I even get to Service Tab from the black screen. I have a HP ENVY Recline 23. Recently I got black screen after tried to log-in Windows 10. It got stuck at black screen permanently, and has not be able to load Windows 10 successfully. I tried Ctrl+Alt+Delete, and was able to see the options to Sign out, switch account, task manager, etc... I clicked on Task Manager, but it went back to black screen again!

Any help will be appreciated! Thanks.

Thanks for your help. It has been a painful and tedious process to recover. Here is the list of steps I have done.

1.  Get into Windows Recovery Environment as suggested, but I couldn't enter the Safe Mode by using the steps: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, because ater restart I could not reach the screen with a list of options that would ask me to select 4 for safe mode, or 5 for safe mode with networking. I would see the same non-actionable screen again and again. Then I did some search and found another way as suggeted in https://www.digitalcitizen.life/4-ways-boot-safe-mode-windows-10,  by selecting the Command Prompt window, type the command: bcdedit /set {default} safeboot minimal, then restart to eventually enter the safe mode. The problem with this method is that it tells Windows 10 to enter Safe Modeautomatically, every time you start it until you tell it not to. To disable this setting, and get Windows 10 to boot normally again, run the same procedure one more time and type the command: bcdedit /deletevalue {default} safeboot

2. Once in Safe mode, the first thing I did was to diable service: App Readiness from Startup as recommended in https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Boot-and-Lockup/Very-slow-start-up-after-signing-in-New-HP-Spe.... Then I was able restart Windows10, but still experience long delay in start up and unable to complete Windows update.

3. I found there is a patch from HP to address this black screen due to App Readiness in Startup. I followed the instruction to download and install the patch as https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Boot-and-Lockup/Disabling-App-Readiness-to-fix-slow-boot-Possi.... After reboot, still didn't see improvement.

4. I then found a post to perform a clean boot, https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Desktop-Boot-and-Lockup/SOLVED-For-everyone-who-is-having-black-screen.... I followed the instructions in https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/929135/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows, to disable all services in Startup. This finally did the trick. I was able to start Windows normally and Windows update was able to proceed which took almost half of a day to complete.

5. After Windows update finished, I started enabling the previously disabled Services 50% at a time, and all but AVG related APPs were enabled successfully without causing noticable delay or issue.

6. I ran uninstall/repair for AVG anit-virue App, and finally brought the PC back to normal! However, I still left many Services disabled in Startup tab of the Task Manager menu. My PC works just fine for me so I'm content not to enable them until really needed. The Windows now starts much faster than previously.

I learned some useful tricks, and hope the info is helpful for anyone has similar problem.

Cheers

@rsonline,

Thank you for posting your query on HP Support Community,

What is the product number of your HP Envy PC? Use this link to find it:  https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c03754824  (Ensure you do not share any of your personal information such as serial, phone number, email ID, etc...).

Are you able to boot the computer into the Bios Screen using the F10 key?

Alternatively, have you tried to boot into the safe mode.

  • From a blank or Black screen

Before you enter safe mode, you need to enter the Windows Recovery Environment (winRE). To do this, you will repeatedly turn your device off, then on:

  1. Hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
  2. Press the power button again to turn on your device.
  3. On the first sign that Windows has started (for example, some devices show the manufacturer’s logo when restarting) hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
  4. Press the power button again to turn on your device.
  5. When Windows restarts, hold down the power button for 10 seconds to turn off your device.
  6. Press the power button again to turn on your device.
  7. Allow your device to fully restart. You will enter winRE.

Now that you are in winRE, you will follow these steps to take you to safe mode:

  1. On the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  2. After your PC restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select 4 or F4 to start your PC in safe mode. Or if you'll need to use the Internet, select 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

Could you please respond to this post with the details so that I can provide you with an accurate steps which should help you resolve this issue.

Eagerly waiting for your response!

Thank you 🙂
