The computer software can't shut off the computer! It SAYS "Shutting Down" and the screen goes black, but the light on the power button stays on and the computer heats up and the fan will run until you hold the power button down for several seconds!

I can't find any help for this issue!

 PLEASE HELP!

You're welcome. 🙂

As @ Riddle_Decipher is out of the office today, I'm replying to you. You've done a remarkable job performing the steps.

I would suggest you to update the BIOS if the laptop is heating up and if the fan is making the noise. The BIOS update may be downloaded from this link.

Then you may always reinstall the Windows operating system as mentioned in your post.

Hope this helps. All the best! 🙂

Thank you for joining HP Forums.

I'll be glad to help you 🙂

As I understand the computer software can't shut down computer,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Did you disable the hybrid sleep/boot?

Have you ensured the shutdown button is set to shut down rather than sleep, etc...?

While you respond to that, I recommend the below steps:

  • Hold down the power button for 10 seconds before releasing it.
  • Press the power button and see if the notebook now starts.
  • If it does, let it fully load into Windows and then try disabling Windows 10 hybrid boot - you can do this as follows.

Open Settings and select System.  Select Power and sleep, then click on Additional power settings - in the following window, click on 'Choose what the power button does' in the left-hand pane.

In the subsequent window, first, click on 'Change settings that are currently unavailable' ( near the top of the Window ) and then remove the checkmark from the box against 'Turn on fast start-up (recommended)'.  Click the Save Settings button, then close any open windows and shut down the notebook by right-clicking the Start Menu icon, select Command Prompt (Admin) and click ‘Yes’ to the UAC prompt.

Type ( or copy and paste ) in the following command ( including spaces ) and hit enter.

shutdown /s /t 0

Start the notebook and let Windows fully load for a couple of minutes before checking if it will now shut down correctly from the Start Menu, If this has corrected the issue, it may be worth turning Fast Start-up back on – sometimes just deleting and recreating the file will resolve the problem.

Yes, I DID disable the Sleep Mode because you can't get the computer to wake up once it goes to sleep. You have no choice but to hold the Power Button down and restarting it.

I could set all the settings back to Default if the Sleep issue could be overcome. aI read that the wat to wake it up was to hold the power button down for a  shorter lenth on time than shutting it down, aI can't remember how many seconds but it was about 1/2 the shut down time.

The computer also auto updated to Windows 10 Home X64 . That about all I can think of to tell you. If you have another question, please feel free to ask, because it is probably something I did to it that caused the problem, but the problem was present during Windows 8.1 also.

I went to where you said and the Jpeg in Paint is where I ended up!  Sadly there is no such box to uncheck!

I have an appointment to keep right away, but as soon as I get home, I will try again.

I will have to do it all back over as Windows is getting read to upgrade again soon!

I will print out you answers to use again unless I LEARN how to set it up alone the way!

Thanks for all your help!

I hope the Paint without the box to uncheck didn't make you angry with me. This is my Wife's computer and she won't do any maintenance or keep it up in anyway. I must do what I can when she says something isn't right with it. Plus, I have to run Virus scans and things like that on this Laptop and my Desktop as well,

Thanks again.

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts,

That said, I recommend you perform a system restore to an earlier date it had been working without these issues if the steps suggested earlier do not help resolve the issue: Click here for instructions.

It would be taking a step backward to go back to Windows 8.1 and besides we had the problem back then as well. Love it or hate Windows 10 is here to stay for sometime if you go by Windows reporting.

I have never done a CLEAN install of Windows 10 and would if I knew when they are going to release this new version they continue to say to get ready for, I would create an ISO and make an installation DVD.

I hope that that will cure it of whatever the problem is. If it doesn't, then maybe I will at least have the opportunity  to go back to your instructions with that makes perfect sense.

I can remember the box you suggested unchecking, but it no longer is available! I DON"T remember if I had it checked or unchecked, but it was a box that popped up on the left of the page-off the page actually if I remember correctly, and I have no ideal what happened to it unless it's because I have the computer set to never sleep.

I may try going in and setting everything back to the HP Defaults to see if that will bring it back. THEN I would at least have something to work with.

But with the new release of Windows 10 just around the corner, it's probably best to wait and do a fresh install of the system. Agree?

With this type of UEFI or what ever it is, I can't see how to save the Windows 10 to revert back to as Windows installed itself and System Restore probably has 8.1 in it still. I don't know how to work around that and save D:-the System Restore as no manufacturer wants to give a heads up on that one!

I sure appreciate all your help and assistance in trying to help me!
