I have been using 2 Samsung low res monitors with my Spectre for almost 4 weeks. Recently, my laptop slowed down considerable, but only when the monitors were connected. I checked Task Master and found that Windows Explorer was using a minimum of 40% while the monitors were connected by not used and upto 70% when connected and used.
I tried direct connection through the C HDMI port nd also through a Displaylink 3100 (all of which worked perfectly until recently)
I have checked for viruses - nothing
Today I have also noticed that if (for example) I use a word doc on the external monitor, word uses upto 25% of the CPU, If I move it back to the Spectre, the usage immediatly drops
My fan is running almost continuously when the monitors are connected.
Its really driving me nuts! Can anyone provide any suggestions?

Hi @James121,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community!
As I understand that the CPU usage goes high when connecting the external monitors.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help you with your HP Spectre x360 - 15-bl001na.
I suggest you update the BIOS from here.
Instructions:
- 1. Download the file by clicking the Download or Obtain Software button and saving the file to a folder on your hard drive
- (make a note of the folder where the downloaded file is saved).
- 2. Double-click the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions.
Then update the chipset drivers from here.

Thanks you for the suggestion. I have updated the BIOS and Chip set howver, this has made no difference.
Windows Explorer is using approximately 30% of the CPU when an external monitor is connected. When the monitor is disconnected, windows explorer is using 1-2% of the CPU.
With the monitor connected, if I then open a program (it does not seem to matter which one) and place it on the external screen, this can cause windows explorer to use upwards of 40% of the CPU.
the more programs I have on the external monitor, the more Windows Explorer uses CPU.
Also, the longer the monitor is connected, the slower the performance of the Spectre becomes.
Also Service Host: State Repository Service uses uto 15% of the CPU and WMI
Below is a scrren shot from Task Manager of the Spectre with one monitor connected and nothing showing on the monitor

Doesn't seem to be limited to HP Systems. I have exactly the same problem on my Lenovo ThinkPad T470s (Intel HD Graphics 620 with a 2560x1440 display) when hooking up a Samsung SyncMaster XL24 (1920x1200) to the HDMI port. However, the problem only occurs when I extend the displays - mirroring the displays isn't a problem.
