Frequent failure of keyboard and tochpad of my laptop with and without updating same recurrent problem

Hi again! You've done a great job trying to fix this so far. Since the issue persists even after BIOS updates, diagnostics, Safe Mode, and driver reinstalls, here’s a deeper guide with steps that might finally resolve it.

 What Might Be Causing It

  • Embedded Controller (EC) glitch – Can disable input devices even when diagnostics show no errors

  • Corrupted ACPI/HID stack – Low-level drivers may silently fail.

  • Loose ribbon cable – Physical connector for keyboard/touchpad may be degraded

  • Windows power management conflict – Especially if USB Selective Suspend is active

  • CMOS battery issues – Can cause BIOS settings to misbehave, affecting input detection

What You Can Try Next

  1. Perform a Full EC Reset

    • Shut down the laptop

    • Unplug the charger

    • Hold the power button for 30 seconds

    • Plug it back in and power on This resets the embedded controller and may restore input functionality.

  2. Disable USB Selective Suspend Setting This power-saving feature can interfere with internal input devices.

    • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Advanced Settings

    • Expand USB Settings > USB Selective Suspend

    • Disable it for both battery and plugged-in modes

  3. Reset BIOS to Defaults Even with the latest BIOS, misconfigured settings can block input detection.

    • Restart and press Esc or F10 to enter BIOS

    • Look for Load Setup Defaults or Reset BIOS

    • Save and exit

  4. Boot a Linux Live USB (like Ubuntu) This helps test whether the issue is hardware or Windows-related. If the keyboard and touchpad work in Linux, it’s likely a Windows driver or firmware issue.

  5. CMOS Battery Reset: If you're comfortable opening the laptop like follow this guide Reset BIOS

  6. Service Center Check If none of the above work, the ribbon cable or input controller may need inspection or replacement.

Hi! am Shema, I saw your post about the keyboard and touchpad failing frequently on your HP Pavilion x360. I’m here to help could you let me know a bit more so I can guide you through the right steps?

  • When did the issue start—after a Windows or driver update?

  • Do the keyboard and touchpad stop working together, or at different times?

  • Does an external USB keyboard or mouse work normally when the built-ins fail?

  • Have you seen any error messages or red flags in Device Manager?

  • Have you ever updated the BIOS or tried a hardware diagnostics test?

  • When the issue appears, does restarting fix it temporarily?

With a few more details, I can walk you through checking drivers, power settings, or even BIOS features that might be causing the issue.

Hi Shema-Glitch

I kept automatic update and install off but still the problem recurring.

Yes both the keyboard and TouchPad going off at the same time.

Yes external keyboard and mouse working normally

No error messages or red flags in device manager

Updated BIOS and Diagnostic tools used but no problem could be detected by the diagnostic tool.

Sometimes restart fixed but this time thisn't solving even after repeated restarts.

What all I tried and failed:

Tried safe mode. In safe mode, keyboard and TouchPad not working

Uninstalled all keyboard and mice drivers in device manager and restarted

Please help me out

Hi Shema-Glitch,

Thanks a lot.
I have did tow of what you said,

1. Perfomed full EC reset

2. Disabled USB selective suspend setting.

After doing bot of these nothing changed, but after few restarts later to these, my keyboard and touchpad working.

So, I cannot say what made them work exactly but yes you saved me.

Thanks a tonne.
