Okay, first off here are all of my stats:

HP dv7-4069

OS: Windows 7

Okay, so about two or three weeks ago, I shut down my laptop, and go to bed. I go to boot it up the next morning, and it will not boot, the screen does not turn on, the fans whir for a bit, the wireless key remains solid orange, and the caps lock key blinks steadily, once every few seconds. I try numerous times to start it up, but the same results. SO, I take it to my local repairman. He gives me the low down after he has had a few days to look at it, saying he couldn't get it to boot, and it needs a new motherboard which will cost over $300. I bring it back home, until I get enough time to scrape up the money to be able to pay him to repair it. So, tonight, out of boredom, I try to get it to start up, same thing, blank screen, fans whir, solid orange wireless light, and blinking caps lock key. I diagnose it with the blink test, and it says that the CPU needs to be reseated/replaced.

Okay, so here's the odd thing, I try to do the hard reset. I remove the battery and AC power cable, hold the power key down for about 30 seconds, plug the AC, but not the battery, back in, aaaaand it doesn't work. So, I try it once more, same procedure, and to my surprise THE COMPUTER BOOTS UP! It gives me a screen something about CMOS Checksum invalid, but before I had time to write that down, that screen goes off, and it continues into windows.

Okay, I try shutting the laptop down, to see if it will boot up for me again, and it doesn't. (Note: The battery has remained out this whole time.) Once again, the black screen, the fans, the solid orange light, and the caps lock blinking. So, yet again, I try a hard reset nothing. I try another hard reset, IT BOOTS UP YET AGAIN! This time without the CMOS Checksum Invalid message. I log in to my user, and it is running smoothly... I have yet to turn it off, actually typing this on said laptop as we speak. I hope to get a quick response before I shut it off once again.

So, I guess my question is this: What could possibly be the issue? I mean, if the motherboard was shot, it wouldn't be starting up at all, right?! I'm completely baffled, and I'm wondering if anyone can help me... Thank you in advance! 🙂

It looks like you are down to a system board or BIOS chip replacement. The latter is generally only done by technicians, advanced enthusiasts or specialty BIOS repair business.

I recommend that you open the HP Support Assistant --> Maintain --> run the Tune-up utility. Install all of the updates that it recommends.

Usually getting the checksum invalid message means that the BIOS ROM file is corrupt. The cause of that can be an nearly flat RTC (CMOS) battery or an interrupted BIOS update.

Stay away from that particular " local repairman". It sounds as if he does not have your best interests in mind.

Okay, I will try that. Come to think of it... My Laptop may have been in the middle of a tune-up when I shut it down the first time... Maybe this IS the problem! Thanks! 🙂

Okay, ran the tune-up, it says everything is up to date... Turned of the laptop, turned it back on, once again, will not boot, same lights and everything, and the hard reset isn't working this time... Any other suggestions?

Hello,

I am also facing exectly same issue with my HP Pavilion dv4-1211tu Entertainment Notebook PC (serial: {Removed for privacy}L )and the local repairman is telling that motherboard need to be changed. Before giving to repair laptop was responding to On/Off button and keyboard lights were blinking but now it doesn't respond even for power cord connection (no lights).

I have told that guy to bring it back to previous position but am doubtful of his skills and intention. Please advise if I should opt for motherboard replacement.

Have you tried turning it on again with the battery removed?

Have you tried a different power adapter?

When you plug in your current power adapter does the charge LED come on or does it stay off?

Yes... I haven't put the battery back in since I first removed it...

I don't have a second adapter to try...

And yes, the charge light comes on, and is white.

I the charge LED comes on the power adapter is OK.

Try removing the hard disk and then powering on to see if the BIOS responds that it can't find a bootable disk.

Okay, tried that, and no difference, still the black screen, LEDS, etc...
