Hi
HP Laptop 240 2000ca, win 10 update from win 7. The system hard drive stays at 77% fragmented and when analyzed it moves to 100%, then when I optimize it runs a very few seconds and stays at 77% fragmented and says it needs optimization. Photo attached I hope. Computers seems to be slow and freezing.
What is wrong with this thing?
Thanks ron3033

@ron3033 wrote:I will give the suggestions a try. I think I will keep Eset, I find it catches stuff better than windows defender, and photo shop as I use it.
I am not sure if my photo of the Upgrade for AMD Catalyst Suite......1 st photo I believe... would that be okay or not okay to install?
What does java do exactly? If i need I will update it.
Thank you, I know those were long files to read through, much appreciated.

Hi,
You are welcome - my pleasure.
I agree with you re. ESET - it does find more than Windows Defender - the suggestion was just to try to see if you will gain any performance improvement.
Re. Java - probably it installed long time ago for some website.
End users use Java if some specific website is written so that it requires your Java plugin to work.
If you are not sure if you need it - just remove it. If some web site does not work and requires Java, you will get notified somehow by the site. More info:
In all cases, your version of Java is extremely old and this is huge security risk - it needs to be removed or updated.

Hello,
Welcome back to the HP Support forum. 🙂
This "SYSTEM" partition is not your main Windows partition and it is normal to see what you see now. This system partition should not be touched/interfered with.
Your main HDD partition - C:\ where your Windows is, is only 2% fragmented which is below the 6% threshold for immediate defrag.
Your PC is a bit old one. It does not officially support Windows 10 and is designed to run Windows 7.
I am afraid you should not expect the best-in-class performance also due to the fact that the PC has AMD processor (1.6 Ghz) and HDD 5400 RPM, also old models.
If you feel your PC is slow, here are some things you may try >> https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c05207140
I need to know what software is installed on your machine and what runs with it.
Download Trend Micro's HiJackThis app:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hjt/
Save and run the exe file.
1) Click on "Do a scan and save log file" button
After scan, if a log file pops up in Notepad - that is excellent. If not, choose "Save log" button and choose to save the log file somehwere
The log file - open it, choose "Select All" (CTR + A) , then copy it and paste it all here in your next reply.
2) Open HiJackThis app again - in the Main screen , choose "Open the Misc tools section".
Choose "Open Uninstall Manager" button. Choose "Save list" button and specify where you would like to save this log. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Copy and paste all the info and place it your next reply
You can now close HiJackThis and delete it.
I will analyze the information and will guide you for next possible recommendations.

Hello Thank you I will start the things you suggest. I know the lap top is old, and I had wanted to replace it but this year tapped me out... 3 large unexpected emergency expenses really dented my pension.
By the way this appears every few days, as it did today.. I will attach a photo and start the micro hijack and send in next post.
Thank you, much appreciated.

Hi,
As I wrote there is not very much that can be done to improve the performce.
- you can try to uninstall ESET to see if this will bring back some performance and if this will improve. Although it is generally light and fast AV, for a PC that old and with these specs I would try to run built-in Windows Defender.
- The JAVA version you have is extremely old and it is huge security risk - you are strongly advised to uninstall it.
If you need JAVA, please install a new latest version from www.java.com
If not, just do not install it again
- Adobe's Photoshop is somewhat heavier software for a PC that old and with these specs.
- You may want to uninstall these apps if you find you do not use them:
HP Customer Experience Enhancements
HP Documentation
HP Game Console
HP Games
HP On Screen Display
- After all of the above, you can see if you want to disable some programs from starting up with Windows. Here is how >> http://www.howtogeek.com/74523/how-to-disable-startup-programs-in-windows/
- You can use a program from Piriform (CCleaner) to remove unwanted and unnecessary temporary files www.piriform.com
- You may want to check if Windows Update has installed all updates so that it does not install updates all the time.
